Google has become, over the years, commercialized.  Some searches that you do only come up with sponsered links.  Variations in your search query almost always turn up the same result.  Is there an alternative search engine that is as comprehensive as Google but like the old days- where it actually returned valid results and not ".com" buy this buy that b.s.?

Google is probably the best. Especially if you need something fairly common.
If you want to see everything related to your subject- try dogpile.com  It searches 10 search engines at once.
