]Corn snakes are rat snakes, and a lot of rat snakes will definitely put a chewing on you. I have only been bitten by one Red Rat in the countless many I have handled but Yellow Rats? They pretty much always try to bite. Had one get me in the throat when I was climbing a tree once.

Corn snakes are rat snakes, and a lot of rat snakes will definitely put a chewing on you. While this is correct, not all rat snakes are corn snakes. My personal favorite snake of all is a Trans-Pecos Rat Snake. Of course, Bogertophis is not the real rat snake family! And, the TPRS is one of only 2 snakes in North America to have 40 pairs of chromosomes. |

Snek did not bite only because dad is not stupid enough to get within biting distance but he made it very clear he would have no compunction about doing so. Once I stepped aside, snek said "Fuck you, buddy" and went about his business. Rat snek is curmudgeon snek. |

Prarie Rattler? There may be some viridis (Prairie Rattlesnake) influence, yet to be determined. It's somewhat of a "trick question", as the snake pictured is likely to be described as a new species. I believe the DNA will show it is closely related to the Grand Canyon Rattlesnake, which was once part of the viridis complex. |

Fascinating that it may be a new species. I would have thought we'd discovered all the North American species by now. Quoted:

I think they were just dismissed as Az Black Rattlers for yrs because of their coloration and the part of the state that they come from. Some of them are almost completely black, others are patterned, but so are Az Blacks. I need to look at the head scalation too, I believe there are differences there as well. |
