My laptop is a Hewlett-Packard Compaq 6530b notebook, which I've been using for approximately 5 years now, and it may have already been 'old' when I got it.  Would it be feasible to buy and install a solid state drive to replace its internal 140 gb hard drive?  Or would I be better off just purchasing a new laptop?

If your laptop is 5+ years old (it could be as much as 8 years old), I'd get a new one. Adding an SSD is just putting lipstick on a pig.

I have a old laptop also and installed a ssd and upgraded the memory and it was a night and day difference.

SSD will help, considerably, but compared to a new more modern laptop with all the better stuff in it anyway, it will still be slow as a dog, and likely won't support a lot of newer software.

So sure, an SSD will be an improvement, but you'll still be running an old ass laptop.

Core 2 Duo with 2GB of DDR2 RAM.  Not be a snob or anything, but I would go ahead and retire it.  I wouldn't put any more money into that particular machine.  If you don't have the money for a new laptop, I would save what you were going to spend to put to a new computer in the future rather than pump it into an older machine.

Also just saw it only supports up to USB 2.0.  Sorry but it's gotta go.

I did it this year on an even older Sony Vaio

Didn't try to do a migration of old OS or anything, installed Windows 7 from scratch

If you do this make sure you have the original Windows activation key

Western Digital (hard disk drive mfg) recently acquired SanDisk (SSD / flash memory mfg)  http://finance.yahoo.com/news/western-digital-closes-sandisk-buyout-190307837.html
Just friendly advice, I would keep my eye open for closeout deals on SanDisk SSD's in the near future.

Get Samsung SSD and cord and use it until the current laptop craps out then move to new comp.

Don't know why I fucked with HDDs for so long...

Even if you get a new comp, get one with SSD or replace the HDD.
