I have heard that early in the GWOT before the SDM-R  that the Army used the M16A4 as a designated marksman rifle... Is that true? If so how well did it perform? I like Knowledge

2005, Baghdad.  M16 a4 w/ACOG and harris bipod.  Later we got m24s and a barrett XM107.  In '05 our rifles (my unit) were used for warning shots only.  No reason to shoot back at an IED.

Crazy J, the greatest sniper in the history of snipers used a M16A4 for that 30 mile killshot.

For serious though, IIRC each platoon had a designated marksman, they had an A4 with an Acog and bipod, they also had OTM ammo to go with it. I think each line troop had a Barret, but they didn't take them out much.

They sent the designated marksmen to the range at Stewart to train with the A4 before we deployed.
