I noticed some cracks in the treads, not sidewalls, of my wife's tires.

I know on sidewalls it's a huge issue, or just hasn't started yet.  These are Yokohama tires.  Are these safe?

Define safe... I'd probably replace my wife's tires if they had a fissure like that.

What is the date code on the sidewall? A Quality Tire like a Yokohama shouldn't do that before 7 or 8 years, and seven or eight years is basically when you're supposed to change them out.

My wife's shitty Goodyear tires are doing that..they get hard then make a lot of road noise, well before the tread wears out.

Bought a used 05 GMC pickup that only had 41k miles and tires looked new but were dry rotted like that.

I replaced them.

Huh.  Do you have any warranty left on them? Either way, you're pretty much going to have to replace them.

I am finding that on vehicles that don't get driven much and are parked outside, it is 3-5 years before they start weather checking really badly.
Almost like they changed something about tires that makes them less UV resistant.
I have a non roadworthy car with 20 year old tires on it that have no almost no cracks, it has a 50 year old spare that still looks brand new (no, I wouldn't drive on it).

I just replaced a set of almost full tread tires that looked like those. One developed a slow leak and I decided it was time.

Id run them until the 4 year mark and then replace them.  I shoot for 4 years, or 40K miles on a set of tires .

You've basically described - - in layman's terms - - what industry has done.  Tires are designed to  not be usable after 7 or 8 years nowadays so that they don't blow out on the highway from old age.

Edit:  older tires would often look perfectly good externally right up until the second they blew out at high speeds.
The black of the tire is a sacrificial oxide.

my wife has those same tires on her car. less than 2 years old, 15,000 miles and they are almost bald. Garbage tires.

I have a set of 4 winters that im having put on next week.

What's deep?

You're right that it's probably hard to tell because of the angle but it looks not much more than 4-5/32"

If you want to exit this life then drive on them, just don't take anyone with you.

^ This.

That's why I buy tires at Costco.  Satisfaction guarantee includes tires.

I took back a set of $1000+ tires twice over a year.  The techs couldn't get them to seal properly.

I took them back a third time, and told them I wanted the tires replaced.  The tire guys said no, so I asked for the store manager.  I explained there must be something wrong with the tires that causes the seal problem, and it was a safety issue.  He approved new tires.

They installed the new set - they never leaked.

It's in the green but not far from the yellow.  Measure from the  thread wear bar indicators. The cracks makes it dangerous. Would not pass a safety inspection..

Contact Yokohama.  They have a good warranty.  See if they'll cover or at least give you a rebate on some new tires.
