Lutherans, taking all the fun out of being Catholic since 1517. MrsObserver was raised Lutheran, I can rib them a little. Raised LCMS myself...albeit a long time ago. But yeah, Lutherans are just Catholics that flunked Latin. Oh we have our differences. And with Armenians and Calvinists and... Not on Reformation Day, but, "Heir stehe ich. Ich kann nicht anders." |

Happy Reformation Day! I am a (terrible, bad, irreverent, about to be kicked out the door on a regular basis) Catholic but The Reformation addressed serious faults and corruptions in the RC church at that time.
The doctrinal split is another issue. I have no problems with Protestant doctrine whatsoever. There's enough in common where it really matters that acrimony over it is foolish. Still, someone will be a putz about it one way or another. Ban that guy when he shows up. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I'll go ahead and add Wycliffe and Tyndall to the list of biggest shaker-uppers in the Church. Oh yes. And don't forget Calvin. I've got a Calvin sticker on my pickup truck. LOL Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Quoted:
The door is always open; and we are all Gods children. The Door is indeed open. But we are not "all God's children". John 8:41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. 42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. 44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. |

I'm a bystander, but the pivotal importance of the Reformation cannot be denied: The Reformation, Counter Reformation and the century of war that followed in Europe's heartland, spilling over into the Western Hemisphere, transformed Western Civilization. The Peace of Westphalia in 1648 essentially established the secular nation state system we live in. A civil society separate, though still influenced by, religion developed. Liberty was possible. This never happened in the Islamic world. |

We Lutherans - Catholics with one less Pope.
I went to our Lutheran service yesterday for Reformation Sunday. We celebrated the sacrifice that Dr. Martin Luther made for all Christians. Thank God for his moral courage and intellectual and spiritual clarity. Just wait until next year. It will be 500 years. The celebration will make the 1938 Nuremberg Rally look like a weekday meeting of the Campfire Girls. |

We celebrate the reformation with the Lutheran battle hymn "A Mighty Fortess is Our God" (Ein feste Burg ist Unsere Gott) - written by Martin Luther himself.
It became not only a hymn about the eternal battle between God and evil, but also an actual battle hymn during the 30 years war. Here is a link to one rendition (feel free to embed or hotlink it, or another version): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=E969xwHA91E |

| I think we all can agree that regardless of our personal spiritual beliefs, that Martin Luther's 95 Theses was a defining moment in western history, and helped set the path that would lead to our founding as a country. |

No argument here. Combine that with the invention of the printing press and it was truly a watershed moment for world history. |

Perhaps Christianity has never been explained more simply and eloquently than in the words Martin Luther wrote to explain the Apostles’ Creed. Here is his timeless explanation that is a superb summary of what the theology of the Reformation was all about then and is all about today.
I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true. I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord. Who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. Amen |

Just couldn't help yourself, could you. You post this stuff in GD and you're pretty much begging for people to mock. |
