Tell me about it. I've started to do some reading on their site, but want to know what the lot around here thinks of it. My 14 year old daughter is wanting to get some form of social media. She has a pintrest account but is wanting instagram. I don't really do much on social media, other than this place and if you look at my post count vs join date you can see I read a hell of a lot more than post.
So as a parent what do I need to know about instagram it good/ bad and shit to watch out for. I've already told her no book of faces. I know there are privacy settings on who can view and have told her if she gets to join they will have to be in place before she can post any pics or anything. Is there other good SM out there for a 14 year old? I'll check back in before then, but it might be tomorrow evening before I can issue any responses back. Thanks |

Instagram is pretty tame and they regulate offensive pictures pretty dang well.
It's pretty much just a place to post pics of your day and like other friends pics. It also has a story feature now like snap chat to post videos and daily pics. I wouldn't allow snapchat but she should be GTG for instagram. |

Instagram is pretty tame. I use it mostly to follow machine shops/car builders and look at (mostly clothed female) butts.

Yeah hows she going to have an app or media on a device I have access to without me knowing? |

I'm sorry you can't control your kid and I'm not really worried about dishonesty with this one. Control has nothing to do with it, but just like most teens, she found ways around things even I never knew existed...I just find it funny when parents say "no" while totally forgetting what it was like to be that age. Now add that to the fact that technology exists now that didn't exist then. There's ways around "no". Always have been, always will be . I found out REAL quick that Facebook isn't popular and Snapchat according to her is already getting boring. Not sure what she's gonna go to next. |

Both Instagram and Snapchat are the leading technologies for communication these days in a post Facebook world. When Justin Timberlake can break the law by taking a selfie at a voting booth and publish it on Instagram but instead of jail time be thanked for helping spread the importance of voting to his 37 million Instagram followers, it is an application that everyone is embracing.

While that's true....it's not necessarily true in the teen/tween world. My daughter does have a FB, Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr pages...AND does use Snapchat from time to time, but I learned her and her friends use a site called iFunny more than any of those combined. It does have an app, but it can be accessed through the web as well. Not sure why she likes it though, it's a nightmare for my eyes. Her FB and Instagram pages haven't had activity in over 6 mos. |

Thanks Overall Instagram is kinda like having a Photobucket, but shareable. While Pinterest is like a boring version of Tumblr without all the SJW bullshit. Instagram is fine with no real dangers. Snapchat is a helluva lot more popular since it's instant and can be used like texting....think Skype, but with selfies you text/send and can manipulate with others on their phone contact list. It's pretty harmless in and of itself |

We use Instagram for showing our most recent cerakote work. It's decent and there's actually some rules on there so they don't really tolerate much that's inappropriate. At least that I've seen.
I'd let her give it a go and worst case, something does go bad you shut it down. Gotta trust them at some point. |

To be fair, it's incredibly easy to hide stuff on a cell phone, even for those who aren't super tech savvy. Quick example; I use Nova Launcher on my phone. One feature allows you to remove apps from the app drawer, while still actually having the app on the phone. Another feature allows you to set certain gestures to perform different things. So let's say someone wanted to have and use Snapchat/Facebook/whatever, but didn't want their parents knowing. Remove the app from the app drawer, and then set a gesture (such as a double tap, or 2 finger up-swipe, or pinch-zoom, etc, etc) to open it. And most apps allow you to turn notifications off, so even if you had the phone in your possession for awhile, there would be no visible signs of it. And a factory feature of my phone is "Private mode". It's enabled via fingerprint and allows you to hide pictures/files. I remember hiding stuff from my parents when I was young. Nothing too bad, but I'd venture to guess most kids hid stuff from their parents at some point. Today, it's hiding electronic stuff. Same shit, different toilet. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Instagram is pretty tame. Just a whole bunch of people sharing pictures of what ever they want. Kinda like facebook but without trying to connect to all you "friends" from the time of birth.
You can delete posts, and people can comment. But there is a Direct Message folding where someone can send you pictures and messages privately and no one else can see. The urban youth call it "sliding into the DM's". For the most part, my nieces and nephew have instagram and neither of them post anything racy. So as long as you can have access to their account, I do not see an issue. Snap chat is a whole different story, where they can send a few second long video/pictures to people directly and it erases within 24 hours, and private messages delete after being read. There's ton's of stories about people sending nudes and that's why it was a big deal when their server was hacked a year or so ago. |
|
And there is WhatsApp, which I've been using for about a year. I think it is the most revolutionary electronic communication tool for the phone, if you are into making phone calls. You can call/text/voice message anyone, anywhere in the world so long as they have internet access, at no charge. |

My kids use Snapchat and Instagram. I have accounts with both...and they are my friends there. My only friends, and I don't post on either site. I pay for the cell phones, I see what they are up to. Sometimes they are really clever and funny in what they post, sometimes kind of stupid. I don't comment or like anything on their accounts, but have talked to them a few times when I thought they needed a "talking to". |

I'm not sure I'd want my 14 year old on it if I had one.
