Allow to live and fight another day, or kill?  He seems harmless.  It's about 1.75" from outstretched legs, and I am in the Philadelphia suburbs.

Agree - reminds me of a WA House Spider which resemble a Hobo spider - kill it with whatever you got.

ETA Wiki says no hobos in PA.

Spiders on the outside are fine. They eat other bugs that are trying to get in.

thanks for the replies so far, the only reason for concern (other than two little kids) is that I have recently had two large crates shipped from CA with lots of cardboard and other stuff and I don't know what kind of dangerous spiders you have out there.  I haven't seen this one before, so figured I'd check (normally we don't have dangerous spiders and I leave the centipedes and spiders to duke it out).

Either way, this one seems much larger than the other spiders I have come across.

Am I in before someone mistakenly identifies that as a brown recluse?

Every spider posted in GD is a brown recluse.

There's one that looks just like that living in the back of our mailbox.  I've been leaving it alone, and it's been in there for a couple of weeks now. I'm guessing my wife hasn't seen it yet, since she still checks the mail.  If she ever sees it, the mail lady and I will be the only ones to ever open the mailbox again.

Yep, wolf spider. They're usually skittish, but they eat the fuck out of bugs in the yard.

I went outside a few nights ago and flashed a flashlight around. You can see their eyes reflect the light if they're in the grass. It's a bit creepy.
