Something I have been wondering about for a little while. Why do motorcycle officers ride in a very close side by side formation?
Whenever I see two motorcycles going perfectly parallel I always know they are police. Has saved me a speeding ticket or two seeing them from a long way off. Pretty much every other motorcyclist group I have ever seen rides in a staggered formation. Is there a reason for this very clean formation other than that it looks neat? |
| It's pretty much used for commuting purposes only, like point A to point B. Saves lane space. Gives better visibility to drivers you're approaching. Looks bad ass. Not practical for enforcement stuff, but we'll park like that while we work an area, just to BS and what not. |

When I worked the motors, we rode in formation while commuting to the office, during training rides, going to lunch, etc. During enforcement activity or riding recreationally on my own bike, never. |

Honestly I think it is the status coolness of it. Same reason you see the biker clubs do it. I occasionally ride with a retired motor cop and he and his buddy are always side by side(also in a MC together).
The only positive thing I can even imagine is visibility. Just about everything else about it is dangerous or at least more dangerous than staggered formation. Even the visibility seems like it would only be marginal to me. |
