Legit credit card company or not? I already have Amex and Citi. Looking for something for the kids.

A real company to deal with but the customer service has gone down heel in the past two years.

Amex has been becoming a pain to deal with now since my charges have been going up lately.

I am looking for another card carrier to set the kids up with.

Their rewards are over hyped. What is your preferred benefit?

Yes, it's a real company.

Since Fidelity dropped Amex, I no longer have one.

I work on the merchant side of fraud investigation.  Years ago (early 2000s) Capital One was like the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac of credit card companies.  Give everyone anything they wanted, regardless of how creditworthy they were.  When the economy went to shit and banks like Washington Mutual, MBNA, Wachovia got absorbed, I think after that Capital One got it's shit together.  Their higher end cards now require a pretty high credit score and are pretty respectable.

I've had a CapitalOne VISA for many years.  1.5% rewards.  Never had any issues.

I've also had accounts at CapitalOne bank.  Also a good experience.  Tellers are the hawtness.

Not sure about their credit cards, but they write a lot of sub-prime auto loans.  I'm sure their credit card division is similar.

There's better credit card companies out there.  Citi and Discover to name a couple.

When you say you're looking for a card for the kids, what do you mean?  Do you want a secured or unsecured card?  Are you co-signing?  How old are the kids?

I used to have a checking account with them and one time the bank broker called me to see if I wanted to invest some money from my checking with him because it seemed like I had too much.....

I don't know what that means. What are you looking to set up?

I just set up first class tickets for the whole family to travel overseas. Cost me $122.

Have their Quicksilver for a few years now, seems ok.  Never carry a balance, no idea what interest rates are.

Garbage.  I signed up for a 5.99% for life card and once the economy folded that sent me a letter saying tough shit and I could cancel the card or new rate was going to be 18%.  Never again.  On year 20 or so with Chase and they are the only company that hasn't screwed me yet.

I had another card assigned to my daughter through my account with a major provider. The carrier became curious as to why my balance jumped so much. I explained to them that I added my daughter. I do not spend a lot of money. They got pissy and started asking questions.

I would rather have them have their own cards separate from my account. Well, kind of... they are minors.

I have their Quicksilver (1.5% cash back) but only as a backup to my Citi (2% cash back).

If you're paying CC interest then Chase is screwing you too.
(If you're not, then the APR on the card doesn't matter.)

Biggest problem with Chase is their war on cash - if you try to make a deposit (or pay a CC at the counter) they make you show you license.
If you're not the account holder they will refuse the transaction.
(Yes, I know you can use the ATM, but it's still a scumbag way to treat your customers.)

This. My main credit card is the Quicksilver. No gimmicks. Just 1.5% on everything. Of course, you have to be diligent about paying it off at the end of the month or the interest will bite you in the ass (just like any other credit card).

Yes, but unless they've changed their guidelines be aware that if you default you're looking at an average settlement amount of 85%. That said, I've used them for almost a decade without issue.
