My house is almost 80 years old and has a slab foundation. I have a boiler system with cast iron radiators for heat. While I have some newer copper pipe near the furnace it looks like I have galvanized pipe leading under the house to the radiators. I understand that the pipe after all these years will start to look like the inside of my arteries.

First question is how the hell does one even replace these in a slab foundation? Are they in the poured concrete? Are they above the concrete but below the floor? How much does a job like this cost? Or maybe I don't want to know.

Second question is that while I was looking at the pipes trying to figure out where they go, I noticed on a 90 degree elbow a rust scab. It looks like a boil of rust with white powder around it.  No water is dripping from it. It's right at the bend, not at the threads. Would this be a good indication of future problems? This elbow is in a really shitty spot to get at.

Probably would not help in your case but I have seen pex run through galvanized.  Won't work at the 90s though.  Hope you find a solution.
