What do you guys think? ATN Illuminated 6-18x65 on top of a 16" Oly SUM 5.56?

Actually, that scope will be going on top of the PTR-91 I just picked up once I get all the parts together to make it into a PSG-1-like rifle.  The Oly will probably get an OK Reflex and a set of folding iron sights. Or maybe a somewhat smaller scope.

But even that looks like too much scope. That's a 6.5-20x50 to give you some idea of how huge the ATN scope is. [;)]

Too many toys and too rainy to go to the range [}:)]

When the scope weighs more than the rifle, I think you have too much scope....[;)]

If you're shooting for a particular PORE on someones face...that scope is PERFECT! [;D]

Try shooting a moving target with it. Or picking a target up quick with it in a cluttered environment. Target gun only.

Perfect for trimming a groundhog's asshair at 600 meters!

Have as much scope as you like [BD]

The problem with large objective scopes is getting them high enough, then, when you do, you have problems getting a cheek weld (with a rifle that doesn't have an adjustable stock on it)

[#6]
Nope... bigger.
6/13/2003 11:21:14 AM EDT

Too little rifle.

Hey, what's that thing hanging under your scope?

Oh, I see it now ... it's a carbine.

The 6-18x65 would be perfect for CQB - you can use it to beat the adversary to death, assuming you're strong enough to lift it over your head. Crikey!

You did read the part that says that scope isn't staying on that rifle, right? It's a bit of humor on a day of miserable weather.

This is the "reach out and touch someone" AR. Last range trip we were cutting the heads off of bowling pins at ~ 200 meters and decided it was just too easy. I had planned to put better optics on it, but the combo has worked incredibly well, so I plan to leave it as is until the scope dies.

Slap a 50 BMG under that hunk of glass.

1" tube? Looks small.

You need one of the coke can tube extensions hung off the end of it.

Who cares what it looks like? How does it shoot?

30mm tube. I doubt I'll ever find out how that particular combo shoots, since I have otherplans for the scope [;)]

Coke can? You mean like this?

The ATN scopes might hold up fine on a mouse gun but they have a horrible reputation with 50 shooters. Go over to Biggerhammer.net and ask them what they think.

I had one for a short while. My sales rep took it back and gave me credit. Problems...
1---wouldn't focus worth a fuck at distance.
2---lens coating had numerous runs
3---inner lens had large amount of debris clinging to them.
4---No AO---how do you adj for parallax/focus?
5---ocular when adjusted (just starting to clean up focus but not clear yet) would make the reticle disappear.

I see the importers at gunshows so I check out the scopes. Still no improvement in quality (IMHO).
The scopes sure do look bitchin tho...!

PS---wholesale price was $290.00

I definately learned the difference between a "decent" scope, and a "not-so-decent" scope...

I always told myself: "How much difference COULD there possibly be from one mfg to another ?"

The answer is HUGE...

I always used cheap optics, thinking they were all alike.
I honestly never looked through the ATN scopes, so I really can't comment on them, other than the obvious HUGE factor.[:D]

On the other hand, I can comment on the optics used in BSA and Simmons stuff...

I never knew what I was missing, until I mounted a Nikon 6.5-20x44 scope on my AR10A4...
300yards is crystal clear with sharp focus at 20x...
I think it's very much like a high dollar Leupold, but at half the price.($399)

I look through my 45x BSA spotting scope, and see nothing but dark haze...

The same thing applys to holsters. Once you go to a good one, you will never want a $10-$30 piece of plastic or crappy leather again.

As for telescopic optics, I'll buy no more until I have the cash to get a Leupold 3.5-10 M1 or M3. (unless I luck into something better for a similar price)

What cheek weld? [):)]

With those extra high rings, there is no cheek weld. I've got a couple sets of lower 30mm rings I'll try before I actually shoot it; if I can't get the scope low enough I'll switch to a smaller scope.

Here's one way to deal with your cheek weld dillema on the HK.  Use an MSG-90 buttstock:

Ok, I got it a bunch lower with these rings, but I'll need to call ATN and see if it's safe to use mounted like this.

Cheap lace on pad lets me get a good weld, I ordered an MSG-90 stock about a week ago; hopefully it'll show up eventually. Got a line on a PSG-1 trigger group, and wide forearm and bipod are already ordered.
