I just finished loading 550 Extreme 147's with 4.9g of Power Pistol, CCI 500, in range pick up brass at .14 per round.
Winchester 147 grain 9 mm is on sale at Midway for .38 per round for 500 rounds. The Winchester would be $209 for 550 rounds. I loaded similar for $76.73, a savings of about $132. I don't load to save money and probably will never break even considering the amount of money I have in reloading equipment, but in this case there was a significant savings in a round per round comparison. Math: Powder: 1lb Power Pistol @ $35. 35/7000 grains = .005 x 4.9 x 550 = $13.48 Primer: 1000 CCI 500 @ $35. 34/1000 = .035 x 550 = $19.25 Bullets: 500 Extreme 147 RN @ $41. 41/500 = .082 x 550 = $45.10 $45.10 + 19.25 + 13.48 = 77.83/550 = .014 |

I'd say probably 10 cents a round or so...
Reality is though I don't reload to save money. I reload because I like doing it, it's a relaxing hobby for me. Also, you guys doing all this math to figure out how much you are "saving" by reloading are conveniently leaving out the hundreds if not thousands of dollars in reloading equipment you spent money on in order to "save" money by reloading. The real question is, " how many rounds do you need to reload before your reloading gear has paid for itself". |
|
Around $.06-.07 cpr, casting plays a huge part of that.

I like being able to stockpile/shoot cheaply, but I'm not going to sweat a few extra cpr. |

I cast 124gr RNs from a massive pile of wheel weights and boat ballast. I'm up over 1,400lbs now. Twice a year I mine my berm for range scrap which I turn into ingots. So my biggest cost for projectiles is propane and electricity for the melting pots.
Bullets - Free 3.8gr Titegroup - $0.011 S&B primer - 1.9ยข Brass - free from PD range, working on filling my third 5 gallon bucket. Let's just say I'm at 5 cents per. I reload and shoot 9mm for less than I can buy 22, if I could find 22. My presses and such have long since paid for themselves. |

| I don't know. But I live in NJ so I either have to drive several hours to get reloading components or order them and pay hazmat fees (for powder and primers). I don't think I'm saving much money at all between the gas spent to get to places that sell reloading stuff or shipping fees. But it is fun. |

9.5 cpr for 125gr bare lead plinking rounds. Factory junk plinking loads are right at twice as expensive. 14.5 cpr for 147gr plated subsonics. Factory subsonics run 2-3 times the price. You really have to wait for a sale and then order in bulk on powder and primers to get your costs down. The two times I bought powder I got 16 lbs and 32 lbs. Four times I've bought primers, 20k, 20k, 52k, and 30k. Also, getting a single good wide ranging powder for a lot of loads helps you to buy large amounts and economize. I use Hodgdon Universal Clays for the two loads above, as well as 45acp. There are recipes for it for every handgun caliber I've checked. My manager at work loads 40S&W plinking rounds, and nothing else. He's always farting around with another new powder for it, buying a single 1lb can, paying shipping, paying hazmat. His costs are astronomical. You don't need 4 different handgun powders if you're just reloading for plinking and training. Find a single one that works for all the calibers you load, and stock up on it. |
|
Powder comes to about 2 cents per round.
Primers 2.5 cents per round. Bullets 8.5 cents per round. So 13 cents per round. That's just buying off the shelf items, not bulk, and not on sale. Walmart sells winchestr white box for about 25 cents per round do its about half the cost. |

This thread reinforces why I don't bother reloading anymore. Given the time required, it's just not worth the savings. It is when you shoot more expensive rounds than 9MM. Get a .45-70. Fuck $1.75 per round. My casting and loading is done at times when I'd normally be watching TV. 50 rounds are about the price of CCI Stinger .22LR. |

About 12c.
Berrys 124gr HBRN $88 True Blue 5.6gr $13.50 Tula/Wolf primers $20 (IIRC) Yes, at some point I bought a bunch of cases. So add a penny or two. I've reused them a few times, and I'll reuse them a few more. Time is the biggest factor. Frankly, if I didn't have all the supplies and a Dillon 1050, I'd quit reloading 9mm. You can get Wolf for 17c/per. The time spent loading is barely worth the savings. 223 is a lot bigger bang for your buck in savings. |

I can load 9mm for roughly half what factory costs. 9mm - Coated bullets at roughly $70 per K Primers $25 per K Powder $20 per pound 4.5 grains per charge $.107 a round / $5.39 a box versus about $10 a box for ammo 50% savings .223 Jacketed 55gr bullets roughly $80 per K Primers $25 per K Powder $20 per pound 25 grains per charge $.176 a round / $3.52 a round versus about $7 a box for .223 brass cased ammo. 50% savings And loading 9mm is much quicker and easier than .223. I really want to get into loading .223 but with the trimming and sorting and keeping track of firings it's just such a big PITA compared to pistol ammo that it hardly seems worth it. |

This thread reinforces why I don't bother reloading anymore. Given the time required, it's just not worth the savings. Its not so much about the money but making a more accurate round. If all you care about is punching holes is paper at 7 yards just buy 9mm at Walmart. If you want to constantly hit 6" steel at 50 yards load your own. BTW I can load up some nice 124gr or 147gr hollow points less than Winchester white box. I also make a nice quite clean 124gr sub sonic round for my suppressors. It is much quieter than any 147gr factory load. |

Casting is the way to go on pistol, I was getting surplus pull down powder at Hitech a few years ago. My biggest cost in reloading 9 mm was the primer. I don't spend hours picking up brass i just go to the range and police up the brass on the ground. |

With the DILLON XL650, you can load about 800 an hour Way back when, I timed Darren on his 650. If he could just sit there and crank the handle and somebody else could feet it primers, cases, and bullets, then 1,200 per hour is do-able. |
