I saw the original when I was eleven (1975.) It was uncut on proto-cable tv. I remember there were complaints about the level of violence it showed. The best way to promote a film in the 1970s was to get critics to say it was too violent or graphic. There would be lines to get tickets.
I never saw the remake. The reviews say it centered too much on the violence and ignored the premise of the original. Was it really that bad? |

The remake totally missed the point of the story, and was rendered pointless as a result. And... it had LL Cool J in it. So, there's that. ETA: The original short story can be read here. |
