Does anyone have the info on who came up with the SOPMOD?
I was told LMT but then it looked like it was a Naval Patent?

SOPMOD stock is best stock! And I don't know the answer to your question...

Send an IM to gene5 and ask him.... He knows!

[#2]
LMT did not design the SOPMOD stock, they licensed it for commercial production from the Navy (Crane). Any SOPMOD stock produced to the mil spec, under license from the government, is very much legitimate.

Copied below from some B5 promotional write up.  No clue on accuracy.

The original SOPMOD Stock was created by the Crane division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Crane, Indiana to help better serve America’s premier warfighters. It improved upon the standard collapsible M4 (AR-15) stock by increasing the cheekweld surface area and included water resistant battery storage compartments. This improved stock was originally made available to Special Operations forces and has since trickled into other channels including the civilian market. Anyone who has used a SOPMOD stock can testify to its comfortable use and tight fitment on Mil-Spec diameter buffer tubes.

While the first SOPMOD stocks were made in-house at NSWC – Crane, Lewis Machine Tool (LMT) later took up the job of manufacturing the stock for military as well as commercial consumption. LMT’s newer version stocks include quick-detach (QD) sling swivel mounts and a more secure lock up. LMT’s commercial MSRP for the stock is $199, making it a rather pricey option when compared to other aftermarket stocks.

I wish the VLTOR E-MOD had the tight fit and rotation limited QD sockets of the SOPMOD. That would be perfect.  I love the SOPMOD on my SBR but the E-MOD is better for a rear bag and the extra storage, butt angle and toe cap is nice.

I like my B5 modstock a lot except for the amount of rattle when it's at the end of the Milspec receiver extension. How do I quiet it down? My Magpul CTR doesn't make nearly as much noise, but it's on a commercial receiver extension, so swapping the two around involves interchanging the entire lower.

Not a bad summary, but I would hazard a guess that LMT was not shooting the plastic.  I bet someplace near Titusville FLA actually doing that work......

It aided with rapid iron sight alignment, but never became a production reality due to the growing use of Aimpoints.

So they basically added a shotgun rib, neat.

The rifle with the funky removeable handle has an interesting FSB, or at least, a non-standard version.

It's a licensed copy, meaning LMT, B5, or whoever have paid the US government for the rights to produce it.

When did KAC make SOPMOD's?

IIRC B5 was given the wrong specs for the first batch they delivered to the .mil and then the defective tubes got dumped cheap to civilians.

To answer your question with questions...

Where does LMT make SOPMODS? Have they ever made them in house?  Do they even have the capability in their IL shop?

There you will find your answer.
