What bar, if any, provides the best energy to get you through the early days of an event? Does nutrition matter all that much? Is there something that provides a little extra kick?
Can you make your own that will also have a good storage life? |

the ones you have, instead of the ones you are still comparison shopping for.
that said, i have a mix of all kinds of stuff, ranging from the cheap oat and honey bars that sell for $4/box at the grocery store up to the fancy foil-packaged, reduced-water-necessary SOLAS lifeboat rations. these fit the need for ready-to-eat, high calorie body fuel. in the short term, i'm not too worried about vitamins or minerals--just calorie bombs to keep me going. datrex is well-regarded in this category, but it doesn't really matter IMO as long as you're getting carb calories rather than just snickers bars. main thing is to get something to fill the need, rather than fetishizing a particular product or brand. seriously--it's just calories. women are always bitching that there are too many of them in everything. |

I'm currently doing pressure cooked steel cut oats for breakfast.
The night before: Prep 1/4 C steel cut oats, 1/4 C milk, 1/2 cup water. Put in wide mouth pint mason jar with a heavy pinch of salt. The morning of: Add ~ 1T chopped dried fruit, put in pressure cooker on high 19 minutes. Put 1/4 C water in pressure cooker outside oatmeal jar Really, last week I chopped up some Larabars and stirred one in after cooking, works for disposing of Larabars, not worth spending money on. Larabars pretty much suck. |

Can you make your own that will also have a good storage life? You don't want anything with "an extra kick" because all of the stimulants have their own problems. Short term (few hours to part of a day) energy (easy to digest calories). After 8 - 12 hours your body is going to be sick of energy bars that are high in carbs (simple and complex) and need something more balanced. That might be an MRE, Mountain Home, beef jerky or something similar. ETA - Nutrition and balance matter a lot after the first day. Your physical performance will drop fast if you're not eating balanced meals after a day or so. |

WTF does GTFOD mean? Get The Fuck Out of Dodge No, he means that in the vent he gets caught up in an event where he can't stop and cook a meal, he can eat.
