I went from a Blackberry 8310 to numerous iterations of iPhone thru the 6 Plus.

Now I'm on a Blackberry Passport SE running BB10.

There are some apps I've come to miss.

Samsung S5 arrived today.  It is on 4.4.2.

I checked for a software update and it says the current version is the most up to date.

I have it connected strictly over wifi right now, no SIM card (need an adapter).

Is a SIM card necessary to make it look for Marshmallow?

Is the Galaxy tied to AT&T or Verizon?  In that case you would need active service from the carrier to hit their update server and download the update.

The only one I have done it without a SIM on is a Nexus, but that pulls from Google via WiFi.

My S5 recently got 6.0.1 via AT&T.

You can download the latest android and update it manually with your computer if you can use google to learn how. It's not that hard. Samsung's software isn't exactly terrible.

I have an S5

It's the worst phone I've owned since the Chocolate.

I'd look for something else. The updates make it crazy hot to the touch and it constantly freezes.

YMMV but good luck!

On the contrary mine is the best phone I've ever had. Had it over two years,  no issues. Changed out a week battery last week. Gonna manually update to Marshmallows soon.

It's ATT, which is what my BB is on now.

Maybe I can position the SIM in the slot to make it work long enough to pull the update.

Is the issue that your current BB has a nano SIM?  It may be a pain to make, but you can try one of the micro to nano cutting templates and do the opposite- cut a micro size out of another piece of card, then cut a spot for the nano SIM just to get the thing going.  I'd be sure to have some small tweezers on hand to get the thing back out!

If you have a local AT&T store you can call and ask if they have the adapters on hand if you wanted a more permanent fix.

I'm a bit of a pack rat for the little things.  I believe I have the adapter card at home in the BB box

+1 , but it is the first non-crappy phone (not a $35 wal-mart special) that I have owned for years. The specs are still quite nice and the only thing I hate is the samsung bloatware it won't let me remove.

They are amazing deals since you can buy barely used/like new refurbs for ~$170 on Ebay.

My S5 Active hasnt been able to complete an update download in about a year. It keeps trying but when it restarts it says "download or Update fail". I have no damn idea what the problem is. I am about to replace it but I have no idea what to switch to or should I get a S7. ATT is my carrier.

If I had been willing to spend the money I would get the S7 or the Note 7 (or a new-old-stock Note 5)

Root it, keep 4.4.2, and disable OTA updates. Boom, problem solved.

Weird.  I'm holding on to my S5 as long as I can.  I too had a Chocolate.   What a gigantic pile of shit that was.

My  Samsung S-5 I think is on Marshmallow now. . It is a piece of shit . Every update is worse than the one prior . The best software was the original software on the phone . Every update has caused some sort of glitch and decreased battery life .  It is the reason I will never buy another Samsung product .  The following are some of the pleasant features , locks up , bricked twice , password stopped working to unlock phone. phone book destroyed , pictures lost . Increased power usage . randomly dials phone calls while you are on a call sometime even to the person you are talking to .  I have hours tied up between Samsung and Verizon trying to make it a functional phone .

Flash an older kernel, use Towel Root, reflash newest one. Takes like 15 min max.

I have never flashed a kernel before.   I have tried researching how to flash then root, and honestly get lost.  Lots of what I am seeing says that once you hit 5.0 or above it is near impossible.   I will try to look back into it.

I will say this, trying to root my S4 and all the fuckery that went with it convinced me to pass on any future samsung phones.

They intentionally make it a pain in the dick to install different versions of android (I'm a fan of CyanogenMod, for example) and rooting and otherwise fiddling with samsung phones is nobody's idea of fun.

I cut up a regular SIM to right size. I cut it in a 'U' so that the nanoSIM would end up in the right place.

It's downloading something!

lol. We'll find out if it's marshmallow.

edit:  Nope, but hey now we're at 4.4.4

Still another 16 hours before I can check for a software update

Well, it's downloading 999.44MB.

Hope it's Marshmallow

go into the settings and change the date, move it ahead a day and you will be able to check for updates immediately. The 24 hour thing works off your phone not some system setting. By changing the date it fools the phone into thinking 24 hours has past.

Same here, the wife and I have had S5's since they've been released and they've been the best phones we've owned so far. Most of the things wrong with it can be laid directly at Verizon's feet.  The hardware, Android and even the much maligned Touchwiz have been fine.

interdasting.

I cut the SIM card from my old phone down about two years ago.  Used an Exacto knife.  It's still going strong.

There were lots of videos and instructions online.

I got an S5 about a month ago.  It said there were no updates available.  A week or so later it downloaded an OS update.

I had the same issue with mine, found out there was not enough memory to download and update. Put a larger SD card in it and moved all my pictures and video to it and it updated immediately.

I have over 4 gig free on my device and like 8 free on my SD card. The updates down load fine (642mgs) and the phone restarts to install but immediatetely says "update failed". This has been the same problem for the last year. The version currently running is Kernel 3.4.0-444395
