[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Know black bears? Step inside... (Page 1 of 2)
| 160 lbs I would say. I've shot a couple bears with my bow but I've looked at tons of bear pics. Edited to add, to make the Pope & Young record book for archery a bear has to score 18" on the skull. To score 18" skull they have to weight about 300 or so in the spring, so a fall bear would have to weigh even more roughly. That is a small bear. A shooter bear is about the same size as a bear that would fill up a 55 gallon barrel is you tried to fit him in there. I'd like to see some pics of the forearms and wrists and I'll tell you the sex of the bear. A good bear will also have a crease down the middle of it's head usually but not always. Please don't shoot that bear, they take too long to grow. |

On my farm. Obviously over 100, so it's going to get stuck with an arrow if it shows itself during bow season. I figured it to be around 200, maybe a bit less. Quoted:

Good size...where is this at? Any plans for a hunting trip? On my farm. Obviously over 100, so it's going to get stuck with an arrow if it shows itself during bow season. I figured it to be around 200, maybe a bit less. I'd say 175 or so. Leave him and he'll get bigger. |

His spring house is about 75 yds behind the camera. Really surprised it hasn't put a hurting on the neighbor's goats. Their pen is about 200 yds away as the crow flies. |
| Having run 35000 acres of land in the area of the highest concentration of black bears and working directly with the state on the bear program as a biologist, as well as helping in running the check stations with the Game Commission for a few years, I could make a fairly good experienced guess, but it will be more fun to watch where this goes. I've learned to listen to all bear stories with a smile and a nod. LOL |

Let him live a few more years...you are gonna feel bad when you dirt him and walk up and find he is only a baby bear...I guess the good thing will be you would then hunt a lot harder to find a big bear to take so you could forget about baby bear though... ![]() |

If you want a nice rug and some shitty meat then be my guest but I really don't think it's much of a threat to anyone. While fully capable of killing a man, they're usually too fuckin lazy.

Scary thing for me is that I spent almost 1.5 months in that area during turkey season, walking in before daylight every day. He aint gonna hurt you. This. I'm around black bears more often than a lot of people. 99.9% of the time, they want to get away from people ASAP. The only black bears to worry about are the extremely rare predatory adult males. In the very rare event that one is stalking you, it is sizing you up a potential meal. Mamma black bears are not nearly as aggressive as mamma Grizzlies with cubs. |

I've learned to listen to all bear stories with a smile and a nod. LOL In dealing with mostly and sadly, habituated bears, I can say that although I know of and have read accounts of people in North America attacked by black bears, I only know one woman personally who was swiped at, resulting in a nasty gash to her lower leg while she walked her dog off leash and had the encounter trying to get her dog back and away from the bear. Habituated bears are much more intimidating than bears with little to no human interaction. Most incidents were screen rooms ripped apart for baskets of apples, crawlspace windows punched out and used as dens and bird feeders beat to tiny bits. I have never worked with any other types of bears. |
