So we bought a duplex in the historic waterfront district of Warren. Going to leave the top floor open as a vacation home and leave a car out here.
What size of boat is the minimum I'll need to be on the river and in Narraganset Bay? Obviously not during major weather. Some saltwater fly fishing and maybe a lobster license. Is a 6-pk license worth getting to learn about the water ways and laws? Love the area. Very glad to be part of it. No plans to move here at this time, but I'll really enjoy spending time here. Discuss. |

I would say 20ft and 150hp is probably the smallest I would go. The bay can get pretty choppy and can go from glass smooth to 3-4 foot waves pretty quick. Get yourself a good chart plotter/gps. Navigating can sometimes be tricky. And welcome. Edit: I don't know if you need a 6 pack. I would start with DEM's safe boater course. https://www.boat-ed.com/rhodeisland/ Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Lots of commercial traffic coming through there, so if you're not used to the rules of the "road", a course may be useful. While I'm more used to the Cape, I concur with 19/20 being about as small as I would go. Would lean towards 25 if you want to have a bit more versatility. Is the 10 pot personal licence still an option for lobsters?
Also, look up 03RN for info, as he's on the water in those parts. |

SurfAnimal is another fantastic source or information we ARFCOMERS can call on in RI. |

Swift's house is in Watch Hill--which is a nice, but rather touristy town. . .you can't miss it, it's at the top of the hill as you exit the "downtown" area of WH to the north. . 24hr guards at the driveway---believe she already has had one stalker break in. . We often stay at the Shelter Harbor Inn in Westerly. . it's seen better days---which is why we can afford to stay there! Some beautiful homes there at Weekapaug---and the recently totally renovated Weekapaug Inn is very nice---and expensive. . same company owns the "Ocean House" in Watch Hill---just a few hundred yards from Taylor's place it's even MORE expensive than the Weekapaug. . . cause it's on the ocean. We rented a house for a week in May in Little Compton---now THAT's a really nice area. . We biked all over. . . I should post some of those photos here. . . I feel like RI will be the next "in place" for rich NY'ers and such. . . it reminds me of the Hamptons in the mid-70's before that area was despoiled. . . |

Little known fact, Block Island unofficially has the poorest air quality in the Eastern USA, the poorest official area being Fairfield county CT. Bristol county RI is the third smallest county in the US. 25 sq miles. Thanks for all the advise! Boat hunting soon. |

Yeah, the Bay and many of the river estuaries, not to mention town/city harbors can be crowded during summer by boaters who don't have a lot of skill, so make sure your navigation and skill levels exceed the low tourist norm. FWIW, the USCG and RI State Police, not to mention local harbor patrols take a very dim view of impaired boating. Depending on water/air conditions, fog can spring up quickly sometimes, so navigation can be more important/useful than one might think. |
| You don't need a 6-pack license, unless you're taking passengers for hire. Download this and memorize it. Literally word for word. |

In Before The Title Wave Yep. If NYC gets flooded, what chance does RI have? Flooded with titles? Car titles, property titles or just paper titles in general? I know I hate getting title waves in my mailbox.

On the beach 1 keeper to a pot is good. 20 miles out we like to see 2-3 to a pot. With just a few you cant spread them out to see where they are. Even if you could find a few good spots you'll be stepping on toes and the lobstering is getting spotty so you may lose a few buoys. We don't fish the bay so i cant be to specific. I don't like small boats on salt water Id want a 25' minimum but Ive spent the last 10 years on a 38' inshore lobsterboat so I may be biased. Please, if you leave the bay learn how to use the radio. Dont use 16 for a radio check and learn the right of way rules. |

If you plan on taking your wife on a regular basis, I'd strongly recommend a walk around so you can have a place to get out of the sun and a private head, I'd also say that 23-24' would be the minimum at that point and probably 175-200hp. Absolutely don't buy anything without a survey unless you can afford new. Older gradys can be sweet, but have wood rot issues that can get dangerous if not repaired properly. As far as outboard brand, Yamaha 2 stroke is your absolute best bet. this time of year coming into the best time to buy and I wouldn't buy anything without a trailer. 1/2 ton pickups won't cut it for this and 4x4 is a must, unless you're going to use a marina and have them drop it in the water for you. |
