I currently have a Panasonic 50" 1080P plasma which is 8 years old. This picture is still good when the ambient light is low but as with all plamas it doesnt do well in daylight.
I was in Costco the other day and they had a Star Wars movie on loop. The clarity was amazing especially given the well lit environment. I asked aboit the source material and they said it was a bluray being played with a standard bluray. Evidently the upsampling is pretty good. The TV was a Samsung with a 120 refresh which i understand is not 120hz. Anybody currently own a 4K TV and are you happy with it? |
|
I was in almost the exact same situation; I had a 65" Panasonic Plasma that I paid like 1k for 8ish years ago. I just decided to upgrade on a whim.
I went with this 65" Samsung KS8000 Series 240hz/4k The difference is absolutely amazing in pretty much every way. I paired it with a ~300 samsung 2.1 sound bar, and it's been great. Ask any questions you want, but it was about like going from VHS to blu-ray. Edit: Plasma's use a ton more power; I also noticed the room stays 1-2 degrees cooler. |

I've got a 4k. The clarity is really amazing. The day we got it we purposely watched relatively new movies we thought would look good, even if we've seen them a million times. Star wars VII, Jurassic World, etc... It looks like no other TV we've owned before. Everything seems like it's right there with you and you could touch it. Great depth.
My girlfriend thinks it's too detailed now because she claims she can see the pours on peoples faces because it's so clear. |

ETA - To answer your question, yes I'm very happy with it. The picture is stunningly good, especially after I input the calibrated settings from rtings.com. |

ETA: Got it on sale at Best Buy for $800 Holy dogfuck do I have a long, frustrating, and boring story about trying to buy that fucking television from Bestbuy. Suffice to say that after weeks of horseshit I ended up with the LG from PC Richard and some two-three or so months later the credit card company is still defucking that mess. I wasn't real fond of Bestbuy before, I wouldn't go in there now if they were having a buy one get one $19.95 sale on blonde nymphomaniac gymnasts. This is fucking America. I should be able to get a fucking television without drama approaching levels normally only seen in contested divorces between meth addicts. How the fuck do they expect to keep a populace cowed with bread and circuses like that?? |

There is no 4k content, nor will there be for quite some time.
What it has done is pushed the price of big, high quality 1080p panels through the floor. FFS you can buy a 60" 1080p quality screen for like $450 now. I'd go that way. Quoted:
If you don't have a giant TV that you sit really close to, your eyes can't discern the difference between 4K and 1080P (or 720P and 1080P for that matter) Lol. Is 30 fps the most the human eye can detect, also? |
| Samsung 55" 4K and it's awesome. I upgraded from an 8 year old LG LCD 1080 that was really showing it's age.......all the new 4k up converts, so you are getting the best out of your channels. The problem is the market is slow to add 4k channels, but that will come around. |

Not looking to upgrade TVs right now, we barely watch any as it is, but I'm curious as to the amount of content that's out there for 4K. I know when they first launched there was very little. It's pretty much only on Netflix/Amazon from what I can tell. That said, Netflix seems to be doing a good job of recording some of their premier shows in 4k (Marco Polo, Strange Things, House of Cards, etc.). If you're going to stream 4k, you'll want to be hard-wired, or have an 802.11AC router with good signal strength; you'll also want 30mbps down from the WAN connection at least. |

I don't believe there is a great deal of native content yet, but the upscaling from existing HD sources is really good. I just picked up a 4K to replace a first gen HD 1080i that's on it's last legs. I know it's better, but I'm anxious to see how good it really is. I haven't unboxed the new one yet. |

If you are into gaming the KS8000 series is the best 4K TV right now. I believe the only TVs with lower input lag is some of the higher end Vizios but the Samsung's picture quality is superior to my eyes, especially with a 1080p source. Picture quality is not quite as good as the new LG OLED models but still excellent. |

Samsung makes some great displays. I think they are at the top of the game right now in display technology and also solid state storage (but that's a different topic).
I would have no reservations about getting a Samsung display. As far as 4K, the concept is to provide a more immersive viewing experience with true 4K content, so if you keep your seating position where it always is with your 1080p display, what's the point? Of course true 4K content is still pretty rare, so any 1080p content you display will be upscaled. No matter how you cut it, you can't take 1 pixel of information and make it 4 without some change in the information. Some do it better than others though. Personally, I like the idea of 21:9 for more immersive content, but displays are few and far between and so is content, but some day I think we'll see more in the 21:9 world and that will eventually supplant 4K. Just my opinion. I'd get it OP, if it's in your budget or hold off until there is more true 4K content and let prices come down a little more? |

Not entirely true. Also, 4k content has a wider color gamut (REC 2020) vs HD (REC 709). IOW it actually can represent a wider variety of colors. http://nofilmschool.com/sites/default/files/styles/facebook/public/uploads/2013/07/itu-r-rec-709-2020-hdtv-4k-uhd-ultra-high-definition-2.jpg?itok=HQbfmNpn Quoted:

Be careful about what 'looks good' at the stores. They'll adjust contrast, brightness, gamma, etc. to make the more expensive TVs looks better and the cheaper ones look even worse.
4K is a royal PITA right now with anything but streaming services IMO. We have DirecTV and went through a few service calls before they figured out what equipment we needed. Really worth it though on our Vizio m70, pretty cool to be watching the olympics and other stuff in 4K. Be wary though, a lot of advertised 4K sets don't meet the requirements set by satellite/cable providers. For instance, my 4K HDMIs are both 30hz and 60hz, DirecTV requires 4k@60hz, and BlueRay players might too. So be careful before you buy, a lot of 4K budget TVs are upscaled or are 4K but with ONLY 30hz@4k. Also, when streaming from sources like Amazon (who has a decent amount of 4K content now) internet speeds must be up to the task. We upgraded a router to handle the amount of streaming TVs we now have in our home (3) to the Linksys WRT1900AC, but found that hardwiring the 4K TV was the most reliable option. A package that gives us 20mbps minimum streams 4K no problem. This is the TV we have, got it on sale for $1199 and been very happy with it. https://www.vizio.com/m70c3.html

I ordered it online and had it delivered, it was a closeout. The delivery folks dropped it off, neglected the "install" entirely, and ran like their asses were on fire. I found out why very quickly when I plugged it in and saw the cracked screen. Returning it was where it went from bad to "is this place a make-work program for the retarded?" At first I couldn't get them to come get it, then I couldn't get them to stop coming to get it. Then I couldn't get a refund even though they'd taken it back. Then they refunded me twice. That's the TL;DR version, there's tons more. I was nicer than I should've been for the majority of the experience too, so it aint like they had reason to fuck with me intentionally. It was just the perfect storm of incompetence, bloody-mindedness, and sloth. |

There are 4K blurays out now, znd while it's extremely limited, it's getting better. Samsung is the only player I know which is a true 4K, but I heard there are 2 players in the market. I found that plasma was better in daylight, but probably not 8 years of use, their prone to burn in as well. Plasma offers better blacks and colors than an LCD, but new technologies are bridging the gap. OLED has very vibrant color and while still pricy, it's come down a lot. |

There is no 4k content, nor will there be for quite some time. There's actually quite a bit of 4k content. I create a ton of it every time I go outdoors, personally. Lots of outdoor adventure movies are being filmed and edited in 4k right now, too. Limiting factor coming up will be available bandwidth, but hopefully H.265 will kill some of those concerns. |

It is my understanding that the refresh rates are not measured hz. The rates given are 120 or 240. The ones touting 120 are in my price range. Would that be a mistake. The true refresh rate of the panel is measured in hertz (hz), so look for that in the specs when shopping. Companies use marketing terms like "TruMotion 240" or "Motion Rate 240" which are not true 240hz, they are 120hz panels that the companies claim coupled with some proprietary image processing is comparable to 240hz. As of right now nobody even makes a true 240hz 4K panel. |

2 things to ask are:
1) tv must have HDMI 2.0a. If it doesn't, don't buy. I could get into copy protection BS but just take my word. 2) tv "should" do HDR. This is where the big difference is going from HD to UHD format. The colors and lighting are greatly expanded Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Be careful about what 'looks good' at the stores. They'll adjust contrast, brightness, gamma, etc. to make the more expensive TVs looks better and the cheaper ones look even worse. Umm... no. The manufacturers ship all of them in what we call "torch mode" so they'll look good under the harsh lighting conditions you find in retail stores. You really think the kids they have working in the departments are going to be capable of tweaking individual sets? I had enough trouble just getting them to tune them to the correct store channel. With twenty years working for electronics retailers, I can tell you it just isn't done. Maybe not NEVER, but it would be pretty damn rare. Just "ain't nobody got time for dat". and with labor cut to the bone these days moreso than ever. The only ones we ever had tweaked were the ones clearly marked as such and intended to demonstrate and sel our in home calibration service. |

If it has HDMI 2.0a it most likely also has HDCP 2.2, but just make sure. You'll need both to watch 4k blurays. There's also two different formats of HDR: HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Most TV's support only one or the other (HDR10 is more common), but there are some that support both. |

I have the same Panasonic plasma as you do and it is also a 50". The picture on that TV cannot be beat. I also have an 80" Vizio M80-C3 4K tv. There is still very limited 4K content out there and you need a minimum of 15MB down internet connection to stream highly compressed 4K content. So getting the full benefit of 4K right now is very limited. However, the size of the TV makes a huge difference. Even though the plasma has much better color, less glare, and zero LED backlight zone glow, I almost never watch it. I watch the huge TV instead even though I'm not watching 4K content. 4K is still "new". The TVs are getting better and better each year. Unless you plan on buying and using the same TV for 5 years or more there really isn't a reason to buy 4K at this point. In a year or two it will be. As for the store displays, they are nothing but tricks. First of all, most displays have you way too close by design. It makes the TV feel bigger. Count the number of steps from your sitting spot to your current TV. Then go into the store and count the same distance. That way you will get a feel for what the TV will actually look like in your house. Second they play specific media that is tuned to the specific TV. Go to BestBuy and ask them to play the 1080p content on a 4K tv so you can see what the upscaling looks like. They will tell you NO and claim the TVs are connected to different sources. The curved TVs are setup to play only specific videos as well, videos that have lots of curves in them. This all designed to exaggerate the experience. TLDR: Plasma is better but no longer made, I am happy with my 4K tv but you will pay a premium for it and there is limited content. Stores play tricks with their displays. |
