Saw a documentary on it last year. Looked...interesting. But definitely not my thing. Dirty, hot, dry, probably a pretty good stench, lots of drugs, lots of creativity on display, some real talent, more drugs, lots of nudity that you probably don't really want to see. Probably. The documentary made it look really mellow but I'm sure it was selective because there was definitely some mental illness on display. I wondered about the potential for violence and rape. |

Quoted: Why the fuck would I go to California to watch a bunch of druggie techno hippies hang out in the desert? Why the fuck would I go to California in the first place? Illinois sucks enough but at least 75% of the state are normal people. Last time I looked it was in Nevada. |

I've been to Fourth of Juplaya. Same venue but on the 4th of July, and it's a "happening" vs an organized event.
Lots of the same people go, and lots of people use it as a dry run for BM so you still get to see art cars, rocket powered gokarts, ultralite planes, etc. But instead of hippies on acid, it's more of a rednecks with dirt bikes and guns vibe. There's also no ban on gas vehicles, so camps are a lot more spread out, but they still have lots of theme parties with fireworks, DJs, etc. |

If you like having fun, go. If you're a grumpy old man that hates boobies, stay home. Never been, but have been wanting to go for years. Will eventually do it someday. Naked women, art, music? Sounds like a great fucking party to me. And I say that as someone firmly in the 'grumpy old man' stage of life. |

Just go to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Call a couple month in advance and get a hotel room. Fuck stinky hippy desert fest. Meh, just get drunk enough that you dont notice. And the bars always smell fine. Well, usually smell fine. |

I thought the blm or some gov agency was suing them for a pile of money... for having to clean up their hippy garbage they left behind?? When my son went to the Black Rock Desert during our summer trips of 2006 and 2008, we stayed at the Soldiers Meadow campgrounds while. SM is about 35 miles north of the BRD. Both times were there, we asked about the BM event. Other than traffic, they had nothing but good to say about it. They said the desert is usually left spotless after the event. BTW, the owner of SM used to be a big time supporter of the Friends of the Black Rock Desert. He passed away a couple years ago and the family has since sold SM to someone else. He was a pretty good guy; really liked staying at SM when we went to the Black Rock Desert. |

Found a pic of a friend of mine in that link. He goes with his wife every year and is a leader in one of the big groups. Invites me every year. |
