Go to http://www.historicaerials.com/ and search for Edwards afb.
The topographical map from 1947 shows the old airbase as Muroc Army Airfield and the area to the north as the small town of Muroc, which is now the main base. Clicking on the different years will show you the development of the AFB. |

The reason I was thinking the circled area is the OG complex is because the X1 loading pit is located there.. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/facility/images/edwards_x-1_pic1.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b153/HRJ/Edwards%20X1%20Pit.png That is a loading pit, but South base was built after the two main runways above it where built. So no, its no the original complex, but yes, it was used for testing, as was the main base. |

Isn't Edwards where the Space Shuttles landed in the 80s? Yes, it landed at Edwards up until 2009, as needed, depending on weather.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwards_Air_Force_Base#Space_Shuttle_support |

The "original" complex was the dry lake beds.

If any grunt hears that they'll probably laugh too or punch their computer screen. |

After 9/11 I spent 5 months working with the SP's and I got to see and explore lots of old areas on Edwards that the public never will see. One place you can see if you can get on base is the South Base Rocket Sled Track site. It is the area circled.

Does anything actually land on the dry lake beds since they have them marked? Over-run area. They are only used as over run areas for the main base primary runway and the south base runway. When I was there the lake bed runways were not used a lot, but I did see them used as runways. I missed seeing a C-5 land without its nose landing gear on one of the Rogers Dry Lake runways by about an hour. It was suppose to land at Travis AFB but was diverted to Edwards so they could land it on the lake bed because of the nose gear failing to extend. |
