per my Uncle
25th ID Hawaii 1965

You didn't know when it would happen

You only knew that some guys came back clean and fresh and others like they had been through hell.

Done squad at a time

Truck rolls up--"get in". Whole squad is taken to remote jungle area

Get out of truck "you are prisoners of,war"

Guys wearing black pajamas VC style

He said they looked like local Hawaiians and Japanese

Wool socks stuffed with wet sand were usual tools they beat them with

Occasional punch

They put them upside down in wooden type closet -hand and head stand , no room to fall.

They would try and get them to sign confessions, reveal parents address, write letters etc.

Water dunk-- two guys pick you up by feet and dunk your head in a trough

My uncle said they were upset with him in that one.

He knew they weren't going to kill him so as soon as they dunked hi he would blow out all his air and they would have to bring him up

So he took a few shots for that

They observed which prisoners paired up together when allowed

They then took one and in front of other started working over with sock

The offered the other to take the beating  for him

My uncle agreed to take his buddy's beating--he attributes that to getting him 10 dollars advance pay and 3 day pass upon arriving back at unit

So, the guys who came back clean signed and caved.   They were given Kp and shit details

The others who took bearings got rewarded to varying degrees

Lasted 2 days he said

The survival stuff came in jungle school

I'll do a thread on that I guess at some point

Sounds like learning occurred.
The kind of learning that is no longer allowed in the military.  Someone would cry foul for being discriminated against.

The code of conduct used to mean something. When I was in the USMC, it was the word of God himself.

I conducted Code of Conduct training.

It consisted of a pre-made PowerPoint presentation.

I visited my uncle

He is very humble guy but I showed him a video on training for door gunners ( he went TDY as door gunner before going for a regular tour)

And it got him talking about training he received

One of the "guards" spoke Spanish

He would try to get my uncle to speak Spanish

Uncle would not engage

He then would insult him in spanish

Curse  his mother

Just anything to try and wedge between him and other prisoners
