In the Illuminati trilogy, the word Fnord was a tool used by the Illuminati as a type of subliminal suggestion. The book describes kids in kindergarten being hypnotically conditioned to react with fear and revulsion whenever they saw the word Fnord! anywhere. Then, of course, they were conditioned not to realize they had seen the word at all. The Illuminati would then seed news articles and advertisements with Fnords whenever they wanted something to be avoided, feared, or simply ignored. Reading a news article describing a politician the Illuminati frowned upon would be lousy with subliminal Fnords, whereas the articles describing the Illuminati lackey would be Fnord-free. Being able to see the Fnords is said to be one of the first steps in evading the Illuminati's control and becoming enlightened. Sometimes this could lead to even more bizarre occurences, however, such as having sex with giant golden apples, or battling undersea with telepathic dolphins as your allies. "The first conditioned reflex was to experience the panic reaction (the activation syndrome, it’s technically called) whenever encountering the word "fnord." The second conditioned reflex was to black out what happened, including the word itself, and just feel a general low grade emergency without knowing why. And the third step , of course, was to attribute this anxiety to the news stories, which were bad enough in themselves anyway…The fnords produced a whole population walking around in chronic low-grade emergency, tormented by ulcers, dizzy spells, nightmares, heart palpitations, and all the other symptoms of too much adrenaline…All my left wing arrogance and contempt for my countrymen melted, and I felt genuine pity. No wonder the poor bastards believe anything they’re told" (Shea, Robert and Wilson, Robert Anton. The Illuminatus Trilogy. 439).

Just for everyone's edification, the word "fnord" actually originated in the "Principia Discordia" which was an underground publication (all rights REVERSED) whih predated the Illuminatus trilogy by about ten years. "Discordianism" was (is?) a sort of light-hearted psudo religion disguised as a joke. Or maybe it was a joke disguised as a religion. The work pays homage to the Greek goddess Eris (the goddess of discord) who sparked the Trojan way by rolling a golden apple in front of three other goddesses who were competing for the title of "most beautiful of the Greek goddesses"--or something. The apple had the word "kallisti" enscribed on it which means, roughly, "for the fairest one." The goddesses started fighting over the apple. Later, the Trojan king Priam (or maybe it was one of his sons--Paris). Was asked to choose the fairiest woman in the world as his bride (note that they did NOT say 'fairest goddess'). He chose Helen and brought her back to Troy, thus sparking off the war. "Fnord" is never really defined in the Principia, but is interjected here and there as a sort of "amen" equivalent. The phrases at the chapter headings of "Illuminatus" are from the Principia. The Principia Discordia is really a pretty cool book. You can get it through Paladin Press (assuming they haven't been sued out of business.
