Video is worth a look for those who have never seen cowboy action shooting. Looks fun as hell and quite capable for protection.

It's a 19th century "assault rifle". The only thing more effective would be the 20th century version.

They're fun.  If I was in a ban state where I couldn't get an AR I'd be tempted to use one as a home defense rifle.

I have a Marlin 1894c in .357 and a single action Ruger to match it.  Fun combo.

ive been strongly considering a pistol caliber lever gun, but i have no idea what difference in ballistics they pose out of a longer barrel.

i am partial to .38 special though

I have an old Model 94 30/30 that was my grandpas gun but I've been really looking at the Henrys now. They are really nice and now made right here in Rice Lake, WI.

I have two, both are Henry's a .22 Golden Boy....absolute joy to shoot...and will feed any type of .22 rim fire you put in it [excepting magnum] and a .45-70 that is a hard hitting rifle that will take anything on this continent.

.44 Mag here.  It's my white tail / coyote gun.  Used to have a Blackhawk to compliment it, but it got lost in one of the thousands of trades, sales, etc.

Do it!  I prefer the pistol calibers.  .44 mag out of a wnchester pack a hard punch out to 100 yards.
I have a few winchesters and couple of brownings.  Its import to carry the right arm for the job.  This is in case the Sioux rise up again.

Pretty cool until you have to reload.  Then they are worse than a shotgun.

But no lever-action shotguns... yet.

Both a '94 model and a shotgun require loading through the receiver so I don't get this logic unless you're talking a non-pump or non-semiautomatic version which then you're limited to 1 or 2 shots per reload.

I have the following:

Cimarron 1866 Trapper in .38 special
Rossi 92 in 357 mag
Cimarron 1873 Trapper in 45LC
Rossi Ranch Hand (soon to be SBR) in 45LC

I am torn between the Marlin 336Y or Winchester 94 Trapper in 30-30.

I love me a good lever gun!

I think he means it doesn't hold 30 rounds and have a 3 second reload of another 30 rounds.

So folks only see guns as a mass combat death machine.

A lever gun will handle almost every conceivable home defense scenario. As will a shotgun.

I love the levermatic action, one of my friends, his stepfather had one in 256 Winmag. I'd love to have one in that caliber, but ammo would be hard to find/reload for. 357 mag cases necked to 25, but heaviest bullets were about 90 grain round nose, and those are impossible to find. Still get about 2000fps out of it though.

I just wish they use regular ammo for the Cowboy action stuff instead of those light loads.  It just looks so unrealistic.  And a 24"x24" at 5-7 yards doesn't seem so sporting either.

I've got one on my list of things to pick up eventually. Not really interested in the various pistol caliber ones, or messing with the .30 caliber rifles; if I do get one it'll be .45-70.

What's the go to 357 lever gun?
7/13/2016 3:56:31 PM EDT
[#41]

I have a Win M71, basically an upgraded 1886 that was made to be a little easier to make, and just as strong if not a little stronger. Only offered in .348 Winchester (.223 round in comparison) which shoots big stompy bullets at about .30-06 range of energy. Also the .348 was wildcatted into things like .50 Alaskan, which was initially designed by cutting the based off of a .50 BMG round and using the 450 grain boat tail half as the bullet.

I also have a Savage model 99 in .250-3000 Savage.

Both are pretty much the apex of lever guns.

I inherited a Rossi 454 Casull. It is nice for what it is. No it is not a Henry or Winchester but it makes an amazing truck gun. I can take out bears if I had to.

Winchester is always my answer.  Trapper or wrangler.  They will xarry a price premium over other calibers and let you also shoot 38spl.

Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70. Can't picture a better caliber in a lever gun; mine is my go-to for bears and such critters.
