I have a 99 Ford E-350 van with the 7.3 diesel.   A couple of weeks ago I noticed a slight vibration under acceleration.  Well now it's matured into a very noticeable vibration.

It starts around 25mph and continues until I'm up to 55 plus.  If I let off the gas pedal it stops, hit the gas and it starts again.

U-joint?  Differential?  The van has 264K on the odometer.

UPDATE:  So yesterday I picked up two new Moog u-joints and dropped the van off at a shop.  The shop installed both u-joints and I picked it up around 6pm and started driving to a customer that called needing help.   I'm on the expressway doing 65 and BAM the whole van starts vibrating and I mean BAD.

Got off the gas and slowly steered towards the shoulder.  Got out, looked underneath and one of the bushings and retainer clips was GONE from the rear u-joint  Son of a bitc*

Got it towed home, threw some tools in the minivan, did the service call, got home at midnight, back up at 0330, left at 0400, got to a service call at 0500, wait till 0530, customer never showed.

Called the shop at 0600, told the owner what happened, he said he will have it towed to the shop and make it right.  It's not 1600 and I haven't heard from them.......

I wonder what kind of damage could have happened when the joint flew apart at 65mph.

Hop underneath and check for play at the u joints.

It is going to be driveline for sure. First guess is a u joint but, you are going to have to get dirty to verify.

This. Your joints are bad. Do U joints and carrier bearings while the axel is dropped... Does that truck have a carrier?

I know what u-joints are but no idea what a carrier bearing is.

I know what u-joints are but no idea what a carrier bearing is.
It holds segments of a multi piece driveshaft.

99 van... That's a long chassis? I'd think it would have a two piece drive shaft. My Ford vans are much older 2wd duallys that used to be ambulances.

I had a Ford 99 4x4 CC short bed with the 7.3. The early model with the larger turbo. After 4 transmissions, I sold it and went to Dodge Cummins trucks.

It is going to be a Ujoint, probably the rear one. BUT it may not have any movement in it that you can tell so they are hard to diagnose. I had the vibe in an 02 F350 and change the carrier first and finally the rear ujoint, after driving another 500 miles you could finally tell just a tiny movement.

Does it vary with speed or with engine rpm?  If directly related to speed, then u joint.

If it has that two piece u joint set up mid shaft, it a royal pain to change.  Best to let someone else handle that part.

It isn't always free play. Sometimes it is just a stiff spot. Have to pull the shaft to see that.

It starts around 25mph.  When I get up to speed on the highway then I don't notice it nearly as much.   The harder I accelerate the stronger the vibration becomes.

Pinion bearing if not u-joint

Chock the wheels, put it in neutral, and twist and shake the drive shaft looking for play in any direction at the Ujoints. Usually its the rear U joint at the pinion on the rear axle.
