Not sure if this is a great idea or not but here goes.
If I see a Police officer engaged in a traffic stop or observe a tense situation while they are making contact with a citizen, I pledge to observe and intervene if the officer appears to be in danger. I am not a huge fan of law enforcement in most cases. I am not a criminal and have never had any interactions with them other than a few traffic stops. Most of them have come off as condescending and rude during those stops. I keep my nose clean and head down and they ignore me. Funny how not drawing attention to yourself keeps you out of trouble huh? I have had friends that were police officers and they were good people for the most part. |

You do that. |

It would really depend on what was happening but if it was a physical altercation I think I would stand off an ask the officer if he wants me to assist him before getting involved. Not that I foresee anything like the suggested situation in my future but this sounds reasonable. |

Quoted:Cops don't know who you are. Call 911 be a good witness. Basically ^ Cops here all know me. I still don't want to make things any worse. I will not stop or get in the way of any police activity, so that it won't distract them or make things worse. That said, I'll never stand by & watch a cop get killed if there is ANYthing I can do... |

They get paid to take the risks they take. I don't. Also, they get paid to go to court and testify. I don't. It's best that I don't stick around and witness anything. |

I've done it twice. However, this was 25+ years ago and the local four police guys all knew us locals. We hunted and fished with them. They were ok with it. Today? Sorry. You're on your own unless it really looks bad for you. Twice. About 30 odd years ago... Once when a cop was breaking up a scuffle in Kodiak someone tried to blindside the cop. I bopped the blindsider on the head with an on the rocks glass that bounced off and hit the cop. After the tiff was broken up the cop (who I knew) wanted to know who threw the glass and I said I did and explained. Someone vouched for me and I got a very grateful thank you. About 15 years ago. I was in a convenience store and a cop I knew jumped into car and took off like a panicked SHOT. I saw him pulling someone over maybe /3 of a mile up the road so I followed and parked about 50 feet behind him and shouted "It's Pic! I got your back!" When he roared out of the store I just knew this wasn't some routine bullshit. I was right. This wasn't a traffic stop. The guy was a wanted felon. He got cuffed and stuffed in short order. Then the trouble started. The backup he called parked behind ME and started hassling me. He was likely scared I was a friend of the perp. While the cop I knew told me he appreciated the effort I probably should not pitch in because cops were not used to and were suspicious of non cops pitching in. It is a good way to get shot. ETA Incidentally, I was standing behind my open pickup door and had pulled an FR-8 from behind the seat, loaded it and tossed it on the front seat. When the backup pulled up I saw who it was and stood facing the arresting officer and put both hands behind my head, fingers laced together and let him approach me from behind, hands in plain sight. Looking back on it, it was really a stupid thing to do. |

I stopped to help a cop once. It was horrible. Details? More really messed up as opposed to "horrible". But here it goes... The wife and I were heading home after our first doctor's visit after getting pregnant with our second child. As we were coming around the bend in the road to our house we saw a Sheriff Deputy's car off in a ditch & high centered on a log. So, like good citizens, we stopped to help. He was already out of the car, sweating profusely and really jittery. I chalked this up to it being a hot day and nerves after wrecking his car. He said he was chasing someone, spun out, landed in the ditch, and was having a hard time getting in touch with the station - his phone wasn't getting reception and his radio wasn't working. Since I knew the Sheriff & had his office number programmed into my phone, I let him use my cell phone. He fiddled with it for about 15 minutes and couldn't call out, despite having full bars. Eventually, my pregnant wife was getting hot & I was getting frustrated watching him pace and not be able to work a phone, so I told him that we were going to head to the house, let him know where the house was, and that if he needed any help to just come on up. He goes "I've got a full auto M16 in the trunk, I'll be fine." I told him that I meant if he wanted to use the phone or get a bottle of water I'd be happy to oblige him, wished him luck, and headed out. The next day I heard through the grapevine that this on duty Deputy who was the former DARE officer for the county, and who's wife was the current DARE officer for the county, was in fact high out of his mind on meth. His case was handed over to the state Highway Patrol. Since I was one the scene not long after the wreck I talked to a friend on the HP about it who told me I didn't need to talk to the investigating office since they had him "dead to rights". The Deputy was fired, sentenced to a few months of rehab, and it came out that the Sheriff hadn't drug tested any of his employees for more than 6 years. That didn't stop him from getting reelected a few months later of course. Just an all around messed up situation. |

This day and age it does not appear to be a good idea in any way to hang around while the cops are working, like Piccolo mentioned. Lots of jittery police officers out there, and I don't blame them one bit. Since I like sleeping above the dirt, I'll just stay out of their way. If a police officer is getting their ass handed to them on the side of the road, should I just be a good witness, or curb stomp the asshole beating him up? |

Good way to get shot.
Unless it's plainly obvious that the cop is in dire trouble and has no backup......I'm letting the cops do their thing. I'm not a bad guy, but I also don't have that whole badge + uniform thing that helps identify which team which people are on. |

As a former LEO I would stay away unless an officer asked for help or you are sure you've made it very clear to them that you are there to help them and they acknowledge.
Having someone run up on you while trying to get handcuffs on a suspect is not a good feeling. Personally I would even be nervous approaching officers that I used to work with unless I make sure they recognize me first. |

Intervening sounds like a good way to get shot by a panicky cop Fuck that noise. I dont care if the cop is being pistol whipped with his own gun. I'm taking some Extorris wisdom "smile and wave". I remember the number of times Dad and I had to flush some homeless bum or burgler out of his business with a couple of shotguns because the cops couldnt be bothered to respond to an alarm going off. Why would I help one of them? |
|
please don't stop on the side of the road....please do observe the officer as you drive by, moving over a lane if possible, and assisting if you see a fight... but the officer doesn't know you from adam, and regardless of good intention he now has to multiple areas to watch.... |

I pay my taxes, so I dont have to take the law into my own hands. My job is not to enforce the law or assist in it. Theirs is. |

That is a very dicey proposition. There are also other ways to be helpful and supportive to LE.
I texted a buddy of mine that hasn't yet been issued plates and offered to let him borrow my carrier & ceramic plates until their patrol group's procurement comes through. |
