Can shooting barrel with a coating of oil or preservative in the barrel, damage it?

Brand new PSA FN light barrel, I passed a brush though it a couple times, but I couldn't find the patch, and I had to Get It On.

It was a bit smoky, but it didn't ka-boom.

Any chance I degraded the accuracy?

No.

Nope helps the bullets slide down the barrel with less resistance......I like to use slick 50 in my barrels....

A light coat will protect it from corrosion. Too much can raise pressures.

You can get a bulge in the barrel from the hydraulic action of the oil. It all depends on how much, but it can happen.

Bad idea.

It's good to leave a very thin film in the barrel.

Does anyone know if KeithJ ever made it back.    I really miss him.

That's what I was thinking.  I ran a brush down it, that had an old saturated patch, but there was still more oil than I would have normally had.    The first shot definitely had more smoke, but was otherwise normal.

All following shots were GTG, but I haven't had the chance to bench test for real accuracy.

I knew I was going to have to wade through a bunch of DB comments, before learning any facts.  There's always more Chaff than Wheat.

I posted in GD, because I don't have time to search out in depth studies.

Optimally, I would have liked to make it squeaky clean, and then give it a very light coating of oil.

This, was probably little more than what I would normally use.

If there was a problem with what you did, I would have been dead by now

I keep mine dry for carry and a light film for safe storage.

Dry it up before shooting. A very thin layer is ok but better not risk high pressures.

Judging by your post count and question out would seem you are the chaff.

To much oil is no problem for these guys.

Why not post in the tech forums then?

No to damage.

Yes to cold bore shot.

Charlie Milazzo (old time respected precision smith) used to keep his barrels oiled then Run a patch with naphtha (lighter fluid) before shooting.

That's how I stored my sniper rifle...oiled. Had a rod with a patch pre-loaded and lighter fluid ready to go. I'd take it out of the bag, run the patch, then punch with two dry patches.

My cold bore was very predictable.

Shooting it with an oiled bore and chamber is a good thing;  shooting it with a patch somewhere down in there can cause damage.  Or do you mean you could not find a patch in your cleaning kit to use?

Yes, the latter.   I brought a cleaning rod with copper brush and a bit of fuzz on it, but couldn't find the bag-o-patches, so I brushed a few times and called it good.

I bought two identical uppers, so I'll thoughly clean the second one, and then see which is a better shooter.  Science!

Someone smarter than me told me oil in the chamber was a "blue pill" load. AKA, bad idea.

What kind of lube?

Are we talking a little Rem Oil, or a barrel full of white lithium grease?

I make sure the whole barrel is dry before I head out to the range.
