[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Identify this snake? (Page 1 of 2)
Posted: 6/21/2016 12:38:39 PM EDT
My employees found this on the show room floor in our store and trapped it by rolling an ATV on top of the snake. Of course, they come and get me to "take care of it" . One of my employees thought someone was playing a joke on him with a rubber snake. He reached down to pick it up and it started moving.
This is in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Deep south Texas. I had my employees roll the ATV off of the snake and I held it down with a metal poll. The first thing that struck me was the flat triangular head. It was about 18" long. I made the decision that it appeared to be a venomous snake and I cannot have that around my employees and customers. ETA: removed |

This is a triangular head. http://www.ecnca.org/animals/Reptiles/Images/Rattlesnake_Head.jpg It's head is somewhat flat because they ran it over with a quad

Northern Cateyed Snake. Mildly venomous.
edit: uh oh They are listed as Threatened in Texas, so careful consideration is required when dealing with their presence. https://www.animalcontrolsolutions.com/animals/northern-cat-eyed-snake.html |

Harmless. Bad shoot. Or chop, in this case.
Know your snakes. If you've got snakes around, there's prey for them. Either find out what they're eating and get rid of THAT, or learn your snake identification and only deep-six the dangerous ones; killing the harmless snakes will provide a void for the dangerous ones to move into, if you haven't removed the prey source. |

Get some ice from the fridge in the employee lounge and hurry up and get him to the vet. There still may be a chance. Snake's eyes are still open. You need him to stay woke! Stay woke, Mr. Amphibian, we're getting you to da vet. |

I was GONNA say corn snake or rat snake.... but they don't have slit eyed pupils... looking at the head alone, id say good kill, and its likely venomous. non venomous snakes do not usually have the slit eyed pupils. so.. not so sure on this one Well, in the snakes defense, he did just have his head run over with a 4 wheeler... I think my eyes would look a little different too
I'd say its a corn snake or rat snake type just as a guess. EDIT: Beat above - never heard of those, that's neat. |

Damn, you killed a protected species. we have a protected snake here as well. the " red bellied water snake".... they are " endangered", but I see the damn things all the fucking time, and not just around water either. . in my book they are pretty common... and also pretty damn big. they basically look like a black snake with a red belly... of course the red belly is really hard to see usually. |

Stay woke, Mr. Amphibian reptile we're getting you to da vet. Fixed. What are you, like some kind of snakeologist or something? If it doesn't have legs, that means it's an amphibian. Science. We'll see what the vet says when the OP gets there. |

But don't tell anybody.

That may be true where you're at but they are rare here, I've gone on a lot of snake hunts and have never seen one in the wild. Now Rattle Snakes, they're easy to find but haven't ever had the luck of seeing a Cat Eye in the wild and this guy see's one and kills it. |

Damn, you killed a protected species. Not my proudest moment. I had no idea exactly what it was but it did not "look right". It did not look like the typical bull snake or garden snake that I normally find. The few snakes I find outside my store, I just relocate. Unfortunately, this one was on the showroom floor. Too many customers with their young children and employees to take a chance. Hell, I did not even know those snakes existed. |

Didn't mean to give you too much shit on it, just a bummer as they are actually pretty rare. You should make yourself a snake hook, about the length of a golfclub with a half circle on the end of it, and use that baby to put them in a trashcan or something similar. This way you can safely move just about any snake to relocate. We always used trashcans as they're nice and deep and usually have a tight fitting lid. Quoted:
