I just bought this for $300.

Needs a carb rebuild and a good cleaning/polishing

My cousin had one of those when I we were kids. I loved that bike. I had to beg, plead and do his chores to get him to ride my SL70 Honda and let me ride his Kaw.
Then I bought a KE 125...roles were reversed

My goal is to get it running and let my wife have some fun on it. Then hopefully my kids will ride it when they are old/big enough.

Nice, I liked the Rotary Induction Intake, or whatever they called it.
The Carb was inside the right engine case.

That is how I viewed it.

My wife wants to learn to ride so I figured a little bike in this good of shape for that price cannot be beat.

She is going to wash it today or tomorrow and start cleaning up some of the little rust it does have.

Long live the blue smoking corn poppers!

Once upon a time they used to sell a Spark Plug holder that mounted on the handle bar, so you had a spare for when you fouled the plug trying to start a flooded bike*. That and small pocket flasks that held the proper amount of oil for a full tank mix when the tank valve needed to be switched to reserve.

* That assumes you still had the vinyl factory tool kit bag with the takedown sparkplug wrench in its little pocket next to the battery under the seat.

Good times back in those days.

If it doesn't seem to respond to tuning, check your crank seals etc.

That's a good start.  If it hasn't been running for awhile I'd grab a fresh air filter as well.

Check the fuel lines too, that's cheap/easy to replace.

Should be a fun little bike!

UPDATE:

So I got back from my MC trip in ME and VT and finally got to start working on this.

I took the carb apart and everything looked clean. I picked up a gasket from Kawasaki for $15. The float has a small crack in it that my buddy will solder at his shop tomorrow.

I flushed the fuel tank and lines as well for good measure.

Hopefully I will get it started tomorrow after work.

Have you checked the tank out for rust yet ?? Also check the fuel valve going from tank to carb. Any crap in the tank usually winds up there first before making it's way to your carb. to screw things up. If the tank has any rust some evapo-rust or similar fix it up.
