So a friend of mine is havin' problems with his A/C.

I had him "hotwire" the thermostat, and the fan (green wire) kicks on fine. The yellow (compressor) does nothing.

The run/start capacitor was replaced, no change.

Fuses in the disconnect block are not tripped.

What next? Contactor (relay)? Could low refrigerant cause this?

Get the stat working right.

Any action outside whatsoever? Hum, buzzing, nothing? That's a good sign it's not totally dead.

Let's start there.

Thanks for popping in and sharing your expertise, to start.

To clarify, the stat is working properly. I just had him hotwire red to yellow and green manually to ensure the stat was functioning. Same result - so the stat is working 100%.

No noises outside whatsoever.

So.... relay. You'd normally be able to hear the relay trip, right?

Contactor is next.  Check for chewed through or burnt wiring.
