[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Simplified Fishing (Page 1 of 2)

I've decided that my fishing gear was getting out of hand. I didn't mind the money spent, in fact I enjoyed buying new stuff. I just got tired of packing around all the crap and keeping up with which rod length/rod action/reel type/reel speed/line weight/etc. went with which lure.
I still like and use a variety of lures but no more of the nonsense of having a rod, reel and line for each type of fish and lure. I freshwater fish in lakes, rivers, streams and ponds. I decided I can do everything I need to do with 4 rods andreels. I have a super short rod and micro reel I keep in my SUV for impromptu fishing, a 5' ultralight rod and reel, a 6' medium weight rod and a 7' medium heavy. Everything uses a spinning reel and either 6 or 10 lb line. So far this year, I've caught everything from sunfish and crappie to 5 lb walleye to 7 lb bass to 25 lb catfish, with no problem at all. Everything else, I chucked into a closet for storage. More importantly, I've found that I have much more fun when I don't have to pack around and maintain all the extra bullshit. If I don't use it by this time next year I'm going to donate it to the local hooked on fishing kids organization. I'm not saying its for everyone. If you're fishing in tournaments for money, that's an entirely different story. For me however, less is definitely more. |

I find you lack of gear whoring disturbing.
This. I had to build an overhead 42-slot rod rack that covers the ceiling of the garage. I have tackle boxes for just one TYPE of lure. I'm getting better though, I'm down to only one boat and two kayaks. Unfortunately, I still have four outboard motors.

| I hear you OP, When my gear starts to get out of hand I usually bring it to work and help out the guys with kids to get them out fishing.More use to them than it is to me sitting in the garage. Excess plugs get donated to my surf clubs annual MS raffle. Keeps the clutter to a minimum. Not handing over my VS or St.croix rods, but the lower $$ stuff goes for free. |

With the exception of a one day license for Lake Michigan, I haven't had a fishing license in thirty years.
My father is moving out of the house I grew up in, and he dropped off all of my fishing gear the other day. Two poles, two reels and one tackle box. So I went from really simple to needlessly complex, er wait.

I just simplified as well... This telescoping rod (which surprisingly is legal in NY!) is awesome. Well made, bulletproof, small, great action, and easy to deploy. Heavy enough for light salt water fishing too. http://i877.photobucket.com/albums/ab336/davepont3/Reel_zpsko729xkp.jpg That looks dangerous, I'm gonna write a letter. |

Simplified fishing? Go outside. Get drunk. Go eat fish at a restaurant. Profit. there is a meat market 6 blocks from my house. I can go fish there and get 15 pounds of catfish filets for 75 dollars. Feed the whole shop and have some left over to eat at home. 17 dollars for fry oil and 6 for a gallon of zaterans fry mix a little catsoup and tarter sauce and a bag of frozen fries. Add a gallon of oysters for 69 bucks and we are now feeding 20 people. Fuck fishing I know all about CATCHING |

I'm going to have to build a overhead rod rack soon. She keeps threatening me that she'll sell some of my poles and I'll never know. She knows how expensive some of them are but I think she would lose it if she knew how much money was piled up in the corner.

I must agree.
I used to haul a huge variety everywhere, my wife would complain that we spent more time hauling and setting up than actually fishing. I told her this was how it's done. One day we were on vacation in D.R., we're fishing from a bridge. These two scruffy, little kids in ripped shorts come up and start unwinding line wrapped around an old plastic coke bottle, and start pulling up fish left and right. My wife gives me this look , and from that day forward, we go out with the bare necessities.
I gotta admit, it's much nicer now. |

I used to tournament fish for bass and my friend and I were a team. He had the boat. I would take up to 6 and sometimes 7 rods with me for each tournament. He probably keeps 12 or so in his boat at all times. When you go balls to the wall, stop and fish for 10 minutes, then go balls to the wall to the next stop and repeat, it doesn't pay to be changing out lures. Not to mention, some rods and reels have 10 lb. test, some 14. This is necessary as there is a big difference in throwing a finesse worm on a 1/16 oz. sinker vs. a 1/2 oz. spinnerbait, or a Carolina Rigged worm. You need different line, different rod action, different rod lengths. Normally, once you figure out the pattern of the day, you're down to mainly throwing 2 or 3 of those lures at most. However, it's easier to figure it out when you already have a lot of different stuff tied on. However, I have had days where I caught fish on 5 different lures. Night tournaments require some flexibility as well. We used to have 7 PM to 7 AM tournaments. You start in daylight, fish through the night and then end in daylight. The bite changes quite a bit.
Now, if you are just fishing for fun, I would probably try to cut it down to 4 or 5 for a day on the lake. In fact, I went with my buddy back in March and I think I took 4. |

Too bad it's ruined by liberal politicians.

I'm not sure I didn't have more fun when I fished a weightless senko nearly all the time, and I caught some big fish doing that. But I've become a much better fisherman in the past few years since I've become more versatile. It sure was nice only having one rod on the deck all the time. |

ALWAYS have my collapsible in the car. Broke one I'd carried for 15 years just two years ago in some skinny water kayak fishing. A two pound spot in some weeds, but I was still able to land him. It's replacement (a Zebco, believe it or not) was able to bring up a 5 lb LM last Sunday. Fun fight.

These days I got it down to 2 rods...
One Medium/Heavy for River / Cat / Salt water fishing... One ultralight with 5# line... The above can handle 100% of the fishing I do. Whenever I WOULD have normally used a medium rod & reel for larger inland (lake / stream) fishing, I decided to just use an ultralight. This makes fishing more of a challenge when you reel in a 7# fish on 5# line and an incredibly flexy little rod... These days, for me, fishing is all about the FIGHT! To use an Ultralight almost exclusively - for most all of my fishing - I've come to appreciate a good fight! Heck, just pulling in a 3-4 pound bass is fun as hell on ultralight equipment! |

my grandpa would of school you........ all we needed was the small boat, dynamite, fuses, and a lighter
it only got scary when his shaking was bad and the fuse started burning in the middle..... we would yell throw it papere , throw it God I miss my childhood,,,,,, we had DDT, dynamite , Freon , asbestos, leaded gas, Quoted:
simplified fishing is called netting. |
It's amazing.....As a kid running the Shenandoah River all I had was a Zebco 404 with 10 pound test and a old cork-handled 5'-6" pole of some flavor and used it to catch 10 times more freshwater fish than I catch today. Panfish, smallmouth, catfish, carp....You name it.
Bait consisted of what I dug-up or caught near the river, no artificial lures. My "tackle box" was a old canvas money bag that mom sewed a strap on for me. Great times. |

Dude. Try living in a stone's throw away from Lake Guntersville. I see your point, but I'm sammiched betwixt Logan Martin and henry Neely. Need to get back up to The Big G soon. When I was in college I had the opportunity to fish all day with an FLW rookie of the year on Logan Martin. It was pretty awesome. Holler at me when you're up this way, I'll do the same if I come down that direction. |
