Like most little boys I was always enamored with big machines. I knew I wanted to be a pilot for a living since I was 5 and have basically done nothing but that my whole life. But if there was any way to snap my fingers and be doing something else I always thought it would be captain of a large ocean going ship.
I suspect I'm too old now to get into that now but what is the career path that leads to being captain of a large ship? Be it cargo, tanker, or a cruise ship. Primarily I mean on the civilian side although if anyone has gone from Navy or CG to working on civil ships speak up. This should also become a pic thread. Sea stories are also encouraged. RC |

Many years of alternate formal education and sea tours, as you work your way through the licensing process, and up the ranks.

It would have been work, but I would have loved to crew the 'tall ship' Cutty Sark (or equivalent).
|
|
I know a guy that served in the Navy, got out, did the Merchant Marine thing. He retired as Captain of a tanker that fueled Navy ships at sea. He was a civilian but there were a few Navy guys on board as well as the civilian crew.
He loved it. His wife and kids... not so much. |
|
An alternate route starts with a plane ride to Mogadishu, a stop at Bakara Market, a drive to Bargall....

Do you want the front to fall off? Because that's how you get the front to fall off.

New a guy was a Captain of an a cargo ship, he was never home. He actually rented rooms in his house to a few friends
just so someone could be in the home. |

A lot of the MSC ships are crewed by ex-mil, mostly Navy. Pay is legit, travel is better if you want it.

I hadn't heard it that way. I heard he had his 3/M license many years ago and let it expire, then went in and renewed and got a sea job. Maybe another guy though. But yeah OP, it can be done at an advanced age - at least at the Third Mate level. You won't have the required sea time to sit for Master right off. Be aware there are only 78 ships left in the US-Flagged fleet so the job market is pretty much all foreign flag. |

Doing something you love for a living is a great way to make it "work" (no longer fun). Buy a boat, sail, the world, profit. Forget the big commercial boat dream.

I went to Massachusetts maritime academy. It's one of the places you can go for that. But I went for engineering, which is better.
I have "driven" a big ship before. It's cool for like 5 min then gets pretty fucking boring. Trust me, you're not missing much |

IIRC, it's very similar process to what you have to do to get to where you are in aviation. Either go to school, bash the books and get ATP, ratings thru school, then try and build hours. Or get a job on a ship, school on the side, climb the ladder, while building days at sea. Seas jobs tend to be 50/50. 3months on, 3 months off. Basically 2 crews for each ship and they swap. There are several mariners here that can explain it better, try contacting Piccolo, DieselEngineer, Josh, etc. |
