My grandpa was getting ready to invade Guadalcanal.  Sadly I never knew him. He died in 1958 from Scarlet fever. He was a full bird Colonel in the USMC, stationed at Quantico at the time. My grandma thought he was on track to become commandant when he died.

Shattered Sword was great. A new look at several of the commonly accepted fallacies of how the battle took place.

My dad's stepfather flew Dauntless dive bombers at both Midway and Coral Sea. Apparently at Midway, he flew off of the Yorktown, but had to land on the Enterprise, as the Yorktown was damaged. He was awarded the Navy Cross for his part in both Coral Sea and Guadalcanal. He returned from two separate missions with his tail gunner shot dead. Unfortunately he passed away in the early 90s before I was old enough to talk to him about his experiences.

My only personal experience with Midway is they have high shipping rates, especially on ammo.

In about 15 minutes the course of WWII changed dramatically.

Dad told me that his boat used to stop for fuel there on the way out from Pearl around the same time frame.
