The problem with lawn and landscaper guys is you talk to one guy, who tells another guy, then that guy tells the guys who will do the actual work. Sometimes several days passes in between this telephone game.
If you aren't standing in the yard telling the actual guys that will physically do the work in the next few minutes, it likely won't get done right. Somewhere on another street, some guys palms probably got trimmed much to his surprise. |

I use a yard service...A: because my back is farked and B: cuz I hate doing the grass and my time is more valuable than $10 to cut grass. Soooo, Friday, I issue the lawn service company person the following instructions: Me: "Hey, when you cut our yard, please trim up the Podocarpus hedge and cut off the dead palm fronds because they're rubbing on the roof." Them: "Ok Mr Highstepper, I'll go over there before the weekend and do it right away." Me: "Good deal, thank you" Then we merrily go out of town to see some relatives and all is right with the world. I get back this evening and what do I see, but my two Little Gem Magnolias high-skirted and trimmed up about 4 feet!!!! Then I look and the FARKING dead Palm fronds are still rubbing the roof. The FARKING Little Gen Magnolia is supposed to look like this: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51r8mEM0sFL.jpg Not like this: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/3f/6b/f0/3f6bf00036cf6951f4ebe8cca08bfc1c.jpg On top of that, they weren't even supposed to touch the FARKING magnolia!!! I wanted the FARKING Palm trees trimmed!!!! WTF!!!! Am I gonna have to start slapping a motherfucker upside the head just to get their fucking attention before I issue instructions? Am I the only fucking person who gives a shit about quality and thoroughness and DOING SHIT RIGHT ?!?!? Dammit! I spent the last 9 FARKING years trying to get those trees to look right. Maybe you should see your time as worth more? |

My Dad has mowed yards for years, since I retired and he is 75 we still mow 3 yards as they have been customers for 20+ years. We won't even hook up the trailer for less than $45 a yard (60" mower can mow most yards in well under a hour). When I was in HS in 88 I got $10 to mow a yard, hell I give my daughter $20 to mow my yard. Is your yard like 1/10 of a acre?, hell $10 is not even worth the gas to drive to your house. |

OP is a cheapass. $10/hr barely pays for someone who can operate a push mower, let alone knows the difference between a palm and a magolia. At that pay rate, you are lucky they aren't stealing your electrical wires and pipes for meth money. RIF Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

You pay $10/hr for a lawn service who ruined your magnolias instead of trimming palm fronds. If I paid so little, to a "professional", I would lower my expectations (and install mew deadbolts). |

dude don't worry about it. That magnolia will be fine in another 8-10 years or so.... unless in the interim the city has to fuck with the street or sidewalk or sewer or electric and kills the roots. The grass looks well-trimmed though, nice edging work. I prolly shouldn't worry as I'll be selling next year anyway. The point is that I'm so sick of people just not even caring about doing a decent job. It seems like everyone is going around half-assed about everything. |

Sigh.... Are you talking about me typing palm instad of podocarpus? Or do you believe a person who makes $10/hr is by virtue an arborist and plant expert in addition to being a mower jockey? |

I think he's trying to justify his complaint about cheap labor providing cheap results. Or maybe OP just drank one too many shots. |

Not sure if its gotten worse or that I'm just noticing how incompetent/lazy almost all services are because I find it completely unacceptable and would personally never pass the work/service off onto someone or what.
My wife and I started a 'reliability board' at home where we tack business cards of services/people/vendors we use locally that don't fucking suck. Since we started a complete remodel of a home we bought last year, I've had everyone from drywall guys, electricians, woodworkers, pool guy, lawn service, plumber....you name it. There are 4 cards on there right now after all of that. My requirements aren't crazy and I'm not ridiculously picky or incapable of being happy. Apparently its fucking common as shit for people to never answer or return your calls and then when they do make an appointment that you stay at home for...there is a 75% chance they don't show up and don't bother to call you. Then when you call them, they either couldn't care less or deny they ever made an appointment. Then if you do get them to show up and do work, its like you have to spray paint the fucking details of the job on a huge board where you pay someone separately to carry it around behind them all day so they remember to do 50% of it without just leaving and saying they finished the work. When that's not enough, you get to play the entire game of 'deal with morons' again and get them on the phone to start the cycle all over again. it's weird, seems like everything is just shit. It takes so much time and effort to even deal with these assholes and then the work/product they give is just shit. |

You know the saying. If you want it don't right... Huh? ![]() ![]() ![]() C'mon man, you know that saying.... its the famous one about not being right. OP is right, everything is half-assed these days. Everything really is half assed, but on the other hand $10/hr is minimum wage territory. It's not 1974 anymore, $10/hr is what a McDonald's burger fipper makes. Would you want somebody who can barely make fast food to spec trimming your expensive trees and bushes, not to mention creeping around your property when you are not at home? |
