Hard to beat a Ruger 10/22 for anything from a beater to benchrest.

I have a Remington 597, a Ruger 10/22 Takedown, a CZ512, and a Hammerli 22SA Sport.

The Hammerli is made in Mexico (One of the Mexican firearms flooding into the US.)  It is also the most reliable of any of them.  Even Remington Thunderbolts.  Somebody else is now importing them under a different name.  Since it has a tubular magazine it is not limited under New York's pseudo SAFE act.

The Remington is over 10 years old.  Reliable with the current mags and pretty accurate out of the box .

The Ruger 19/22 Takedown is pretty neat and  accurate.  Comes with a nice tote bag too.  Also reliable with no aftermarket parts.  But if you want you can spend thousands replacing everysingle part of the rifle and telling everyone how great they are.

The CZ512 is the best of the lot though.  As accurate as any of my bolt action 22's.

For a semi-auto .22lr rifle, the Ruger 10/22 (or it's copies) are the gold standard.

If it were me, and I were wanting one semi-auto 22lr, I'd build a Kidd 10/22.

It is a gun I designed a while back, now produced by Electronic Arms. Search for Electronic Arms bullpup and you can find the facebook page.

Ar based 22lr with real lower not the polymer crap or the 22lr clones that have a dedicated style lower and upper.

Also gives you the option of a upper and mags down the road if laws change or shtf.

also, in addition to a dedicated .22LR AR-15 upper, you should look at the .22WMR upper produced by Ray-Vin. I believe magnum rimfire is legal as a semiauto in great britain.

.22lr I was squirrel hunting with this morning. It has a conversion kit in it so not sure what options that leaves you with.

I have a 10/22 international but I bought it more to have than to actually use(always wanted one with the full length stock). My bolt action gets used much more, especially with the difficulty in replenishment. Manual actions with low capacity slow ammo consumption. Being an accessory nut I will eventually get a .22 conversion for my AR as well but it's low priority.

ETA-also have a dedicated 1911 frame with match grade trigger that I use with a .22 conversion. My wife decided it's her gun so it has pink grips to match my daughter's pink Cricket.

There are prettier 22lrs out there and more expensive but none as versatile as a 10/22, especially with the magazine style.

Ruger 10/22. Not even a question.

M&P 22 is the best AR pattern .22LR out there.  Takes down is exactly like an AR so cleaning is super easy.  Manual of arms is just like AR with drop free mags, bolt release, safety manipulation, etc..Mags are large and easy to manage.  Best thing is that it takes all the aftermarket AR furniture.

Ruger 10/22 is a classic for classic style.  But is not a similar comparison.  If you like apples, don't get oranges.

A mag of .22LR in the face is pretty devastating.

The S&W M&P has controls exactly like an AR15, and they are fun to shoot, so it gets my vote.  It is the only .22lr clone I would buy.

I would recommend the 10/22 also.

I'm loving the AR .22 pistol I built around a CMMG bolt, model 1 sales barrel, and a Colt 9mm upper receiver.
I'm very happy with the accuracy and function. Rates right up there with my 10/22s.

I have 10/22 and M&P 15/22. I also have a CMMG Conversion Kit for AR 15's that works well. That is cheaper than buying a new gun if you have an AR. All are a blast to shoot

I have a CMMG dedicated upper with a 4.5" barrel and a suppressor.  It runs like a stripe-assed ape with Federal Auto Match or CCI Standard Velocity.  Slap that upper on a full auto lower and it's pretty much the most fun you can have with your pants on.

My S&W 15-22 is a ton of fun, accurate and reliable. We had a .22 get-together last evening and everyone with a 10-22 had a stoppage or problem of some type.  Seemed related to the high-cap mags.
