The grates that came with my Weber 22" seem kind of flimsy. Am I being a snob by wanting to buy a stone or cast iron grates? Can I put a cast iron pan directly on the grates and just cook that way?

Never had a problem with stock grates. Use a heavy cast iron pan all the time to make fajita veggies.

Stock grates are fine, but if you really want to upgrade...

They seem to be thinner than they used to.  I have a stock one without the side access hinges and it has dipped a little bit in a few spots, though easy enough to straighten.  I think the ones with the charcoal access doors are thicker gauge material.
