How in the hell do I turn off my screen during calls? It automatically shuts off when I put the phone to my ear but every once in awhile the damn screen comes on and I accidently hit a button or drop a call.

Hit the lock screen button.
5/10/2016 11:23:24 AM EDT

If you hit the power button during a call won't that shut off the screen?

One of the things I really don't like about my note is trying to keep the screen on during calls -- say so I can look up an email.  As soon as the light sensor is darkened it assumes the phone is on your face and shuts of the screen.

I can hit the power button but there has to be a way for me to remove that feature.

Then *your* Note 4 is *completely* different from the Sprint Note 4 I'm holding at my desk, right this moment.
This is what Verizon suggests:
From a home screen, tap Phone (located in the lower left).
Tap Menu Menu icon.
Tap Call settings.
Tap Turn off screen during calls to enable or disable.
Note Enabled when a check mark is present.

I called verizon and the service rep put me on hold for 10 mins or so. When he came back on the line, he told me to turn that on. Said it will help. Ill try it for a few days and well see what happens...

Then he's an idiot. That feature is an accessibility feature that dials people.

"It’s supposed to work when the person you want to call is displayed on the screen, then you put the phone up to your ear, and viola, it will dial that person."

You really just need to find the setting "Turn off screen during call when the phone is near face" .... it's in there, somewhere. It's a proximity sensor setting. Keep poking at it.

Just wait until the screen turns on and wont let you answer a phone call.

or when you put the phone to your ear for a phone call and the screen turns black, but won't turn back on even after hitting the on button.

or when you have full service but takes literally 1-2 minutes to start dialing the person you're trying to call.

or when it just reboots automatically deleting any alarms you had set.

or just straight up freezes while you're using it and can't do anything but pull the battery out.

or crashes every time you use the internet, only to delete what you were just looking at.

or just butt dials anyone it feels you should be talking too.

or lets you use the screen but the main home button stops working and you have to restart the phone.

Worst phone I've ever had.

Not calling you a liar, but I've looked through every single setting on my Verizon Note 4, and I don't have any such option either.  Granted, the screen on mine turns off when I hold it to my ear, so maybe his is a hardware/software issue.  Other carrier versions of the software may have that option though.

I can't find it either.  I think there have been two system updates since I've had my Note4, looks like the user interface for that setting got lost at some point.

Do you keep the phone flat against your face? I see some people hold the phone at an angle to their ear, this allows light to reach the sensor and thinks that the phone isn't against your face so the screen turns on.

Yes I do.

The only other thing I can think of is turning off the Smart stay feature, Settings - Display - Smart stay unchecked.  It doesn't make a difference on my phone, but my coworker's Sprint phone turned off when held up to the ear, she said she was having the same issue as you.  As an aside, I couldn't find the feature HKUSP45C was referring to in the phone menu on her Sprint Note 4, that's why I was asking him what Android version he was running.  Stuff gets added and deleted all the time with the version updates.

I'm guessing that's the case, the functionality you were referring to may have been deleted with the new Android update, and as far as rooting it, well, anything goes.

This might sound really silly, but try taking canned air (or just blow) and clean out any dirt/debris that may be in the speaker holes at the top of the phone.  According to some, dirt can interfere with the proximity sensor which is located somewhere in there.  Check here for reference:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note-4/458215-note-4-proximity-sensor-during-calls.html replies 12 and 13

It might not work, but it's worth a shot considering you can do this in just a couple seconds.  You said you have had that phone since it came out, so chances are the sensor might just be dirty.
