Let's say you are hired to go to the local jail by an out of state lawyer to have an inmate sign an affidavit agreeing to his child being adopted by a step dad out of state. Guy's not a molester, just a regular robber in jail for allegedly stealing drugs from a drug dealer. He sticks out his hand and smiles as you walk into the visiting room......

If he looked somewhat normal and clean, sure, same rule that applies for everybody |

100% yes. He is still a person, although one who makes made decisions. Child perps, rapist, wife beaters not a chance. Murderer possibly depends.

I was a guard for a while, and I had no issues with shaking their hands. Most of the time if you treated them with respect then you would be respected.

As a general policy, I try to avoid touching Inkies. View Quote I read that as "Ickies" at first. Elbow rub instead? I had a client who thought he was Howard Hughes. He would shake hands with no one, he wanted to touch elbows instead. It was the most awkward psychosis ever, especially when he was interacting with other "captains of industry" |

Did it ten minutes ago. I keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in my car...

No way. Blade at 45 degrees while yelling DISENGAGE. YOU WILL NOT TOUCH MY HAND!

I don't like shaking hands with coworkers let alone other people I don't know.
Inmate probably happy kids getting adopted. Should get him off the child support hook lol |

[#29]
The real questions should be why would he shake hands with a lawyer.
|
|
[#30]
Depends on who he is and why I'm there. Generally speaking when I'm in a jail I do not permit inmates to initiate any kind of contact. That's for their safety as well as mine. Shaking hands is a sign of trust.
I have made a few exceptions but only after letting the jail staff know I was OK with it. Once I did it to congratulate a long time convict on finally getting out and starting his new life. He was a true convict, not some whiny ass bitch prisoner. Another time it was to thank an inmate for stepping in and preventing an all out gang assault on me while I was putting someone in cuffs. |

Im still hung up on the fact that he is in jail for stealing drugs from a DRUG DEALER??? Hows that work?

Good point. The guy's in prison. He's certainly an inkie. Wouldn't want to catch Hep C or any other of that smorgasbord of diseases carried by your average inkie. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

We had to use gloves and masks when we handled inmate paperwork in the office so we wouldn't get HIVerpesatitis from the inkies. |

I would. No need to disrespect a man just for a bad decision. If he was super scary and looked like he could seriously injure me, and was mentally deranged,
I would decline though. |

The first time I meet 98% of my customers, they are in jail. Yes, I shake hands with 99% of them. After I get them on their way and I get back to my car, I use the hand sanitizer I keep in the car (and the truck) 100% of the time.

Have you seen the toilet paper used in jail?

You gotta be thinking about what they just pulled out of their prison purse.

No, I try to avoid touching inmates whenever possible.
I've done the fist bump when a long time resident finally makes chain but there's no way I'm shaking and inmates hand. |

Yes, because the only difference between us is he got caught. I'd be watching is other hand though....

I think the same thing when I meet a lawyer for the first time.

Why not? I shook hands with defendants after trials, too. And I was the one trying to put them or keep them in jail.

not only would I but I have, working with at risk students I annually took a bunch of them to a local lockup to get lectured to by cons on a cell block. I live in a relatively safe suburb of Cook county, pretty white bread suburb, the first time I met a couple of these guys I was quite surprised that we have such as them living in the county. Of course having sat on a grand jury for a year dispelled any doubts I had that wasn't the case.
