Just watched a shoplifter run out of Lowes and a bystander ran in his truck, chased him, and almost hit him it wasn't his stuff so why would anyone put themselves at risk?

Nope.

No, I would just trip them if the opportunity presented itself.

I'd take advantage of the confusion to cut in line,.

As a customer?  I'd probably want to, but no I wouldn't.  Most shoplifters are harmless, occasionally one has a weapon and it's just not worth the risk.

How do you know he was a shoplifter and not just a hard worker trying to get back quickly to whatever he was working on?

Because he had something in his arms and ran out the front door while employees chased him and yelled "hey, come back!" The dirtbag was pretty fast. He continued on foot and didn't have a car, at least not in the parking lot.

Nope.  I'd stand there and MYOB like an old Russian woman watching a car crash.

They wanted to sell him an extended warranty.

Sounds like a good way to get hurt, sued or both.

I wouldnt chase one down but I stepped into the path of a teen running from loss prevention at wal mart once. It was enough for him to throw on the brakes trying to decide which way to go when lp snagged him from behind.

Peter Parker let the robber get away when he could have stopped him, and what happened because of that?

Why, he ended up killing Peters Uncle Ben of course.

Think about Uncle Ben the next time you see a criminal trying to make his get away.

Yup. I'd probably try to get a description and licence plate number if I could.

If I saw someone shoplifting from a store who's owner I knew personally, I might try to stop them. Maybe.

Nope, not my problem. Major retailers have loss prevention people to deal with that.

Not unless I was getting paid to do it and had a badge, gun and immunity from prosecution.  Then I'd chase them all day long.

But since I'm getting old and have bad knees, I'd shoot them in the ass first so I didn't have to run too fast.

Other than that, I wouldn't give them a second look, much less chase them.

I did it once when I was a kid working retail.  Gold Circle, if anyone remembers that store.  We got $25 extra in our weekly pay for every shoplifter we caught.

Most were kids stealing candy and cassette tapes.  One guy hit the jewlery counter and ran.  Me and another guy took off after him.  Got to the parking lot and we were staring at a shotgun pointed at us from a car window.

Never again.

I'm thinking about the $100K in attorney fees that I will need to defend myself after I attempt to stop the shoplifter and he skins his knee or hits his head on the pavement. That's the way the world is now.

A knew a guy who worked in the tool section of sears

he said that employee theft was around $180,000 per year, just from the tool section

if sears doesn't give a fuck, why would you?

The last fleeing shoplifter I saw covered the Walmart parking lot in about six seconds.  He could've qualified for the 2016 Olympics

Every time I think about Uncle Ben I end up in the rice aisle.

And in the interests of tough talk: I don't chase shoplifters, I let my bullets do that for me.

This -- and realize most retailers even restrict the amount of chase their LP staff are allowed in order to stop shoplifters. They never allow normal store staff to give chase.

I got in trouble for chasing down shoplifters when I was a mall security guard

Even though the 3-4 rich and vibrant guys were still wearing the jewelry they had stolen and there was more all over the ground around them No charges, cops let them go.

My father did some mall cop work. If the shoplifters left the store they stole from they weren't allowed to do anything but watch them leave.
