I have a quote to get the whole truck done (4 door) with a windshield film by Llumar for under $450, as well as a quote for a 3M provider for around the same by another shop.

Other than making sure they've been in business a while and their warranties are nationwide, what are some things to think about when looking for a tint?
4/29/2016 3:11:54 AM EDT
[#1]
Get the matte tint.it looks cool
4/29/2016 3:12:19 AM EDT
[#2]
I always went with 3M because I liked their warranty.

Are you getting it below the legal limit?  With the shop do that?
4/29/2016 3:27:29 AM EDT
[#3]
If you want to listen to Rush or any AM radio know that metallic tints will block am signals. an antenna in the window won't hardly work for AM. Ceramic tints don't have this effect.

I've never seen a shop that had a problem doing it.

Unless your windows have insane compound curves, you could do it yourself in under an hour for FAR less than that quote.
4/29/2016 7:34:28 AM EDT
[#6]
Jesus h Christ. I could do 3 vehicles for that much here.
4/29/2016 7:36:07 AM EDT
[#7]
That seems high. I've tinted two crown vics, 3 series BMW, mustang, f-body, and a couple others and I don't think i've paid more than $300-$350.
4/29/2016 7:38:38 AM EDT
[#8]
That quote sounds really high. Last several vehicles I have tinted the going rate was ~$35/side window, and more for the back glass obviously. That was for 3M.
4/29/2016 7:54:07 AM EDT
[#9]
Way high...Got 3 vehicles done here in Houston for that.
4/29/2016 7:55:13 AM EDT
[#10]
I just had my 4-door focus hatch done, legal up front, 5% in the back and a 6" visor on the top of the windshield for $150 less than your quote.  All done with Llumar CTX.

Might want to shop around.
4/29/2016 7:58:56 AM EDT
[#11]
That price is about right if it's ceramic tint (which is what you want for the TX heat)
4/29/2016 8:38:30 AM EDT
[#12]
It's under $300 for almost any 4 door tint here.
4/29/2016 8:58:10 AM EDT
[#13]
$160 for my 4-door tacoma He came to me, too.
4/29/2016 8:59:28 AM EDT
[#14]
Go with the top of the line 3M Carbon Fiber stuff, it doesn't scratch or fade as easily. Also $450 seems a bit much.

And expect to buy twice as much film because it is a learning process the first time. Pro installers do a much better job because of experience not because it's rocket science.

I had a local shop do 7 windows at a cost of $275, three years later it still looks perfect. All of the edges are right on, no bubbles, great job.

Seems high, just got my truck done, 4 side window, back window with electric slider, and windshield strip for $300
4/29/2016 9:40:33 AM EDT

$450 seems high

Got my crew cab Titan done with 5% rear doors and windows, 25% froNt doors, and 5% eyebrow for $150

Dealer wanted to charge $600 to tint the CX-5 when we bought it for 5% rear doors and windows, and 25% front windows. The salesman took it to his dad's shop and had it done for $100
4/29/2016 9:42:53 AM EDT
[#18]
I paid 195 out the door for a 4 door sedan and the top tier 3m tint....gone to them for years and it used to be 175.  I'd never pay that much.

Holy Shit!  Getting my wife's new 2016 Edge done tonight for $200, and I thought that was a tad on the high side.
4/29/2016 9:53:06 AM EDT

$450 is high. I paid $175 for 3m Llumar with a lifetime warranty, 8 window large suv.

That came out nice.

Had just the 2 front windows in my Tacoma done with Llumar ceramic 50% tint to stay VA legal. Lifetime warranty through the shop that did it (LA Tint). $105 and it took 15 minutes and looks awesome.

Llumar CTX, yo.

Already have shown ya it can be done for less than your quote.  Unless there's that much difference in labor rates between Texas and Mo.

That is 2x too much....maybe more if your a repeat customer.  Ive done a dozen or so vehicles with Llumar.  I think its the best.  Do 5% visor, 15% over factory tint rear and back sides, and 5 or 15% over the front sides....depending on how you like it.   Another option is to do 5% over the rear glass instead of 15%, factory tinted or not, since it gets headlights direct to it and is usually vertical on a truck.

Neither have I.  But one shop I went to would only accept cash for under-the-limit jobs.  I guess they thought that no CC papertrail would save them from any legal backlash.  I dunno.

I didn't get that stipulation when the guy told me he could do 5% on all glass, but "keep in mind, 35% is the legal limit for the front doors."  Maybe some states hold the company legally liable, in Missourah, is on the owner of the car.

The shop I go to here will tint at any level you want. You just have to sign a waiver that states if the police dick slap you because of it they are not obligated to remove or replace it for free. Limo tint at your own risk.

Same for the shop that did my Audi in NY, owner told me "You're going to get pulled over with that tint so I don't recommend it but we'll do it if you want". Never got a second look from cops in NY but I had it removed before I moved here to GA.

Madico 35%/20% with lifetime warranty for $240 (if I remember).  I would prefer no tint on the ol' girl (just looks more "right" as you can see) but the A/C would never keep up with the Texas sun.

I don't know. The tint shop is a 3M dealer....that's all I know.

I got.my truck done in Tyler.

The only thing I can complain about is I think they cracked my windshield. My truck didn't have satellite radio, but it was hooked up for it. I ordered an OEM satellite radio receiver and installed it under the dash where it is supposed to go, but the antenna was short. The best spot I could place ot was above my rear view mirror on the inside of the windshield held by heavy duty 3M tape that comes on the antenna.

The knocked it off to put the eyebrow on and stuck it back on without new tape. Didn't notice until a hot day and my antenna kept falling, then I noticed the crack. Hardly noticeable unless the sun hits it just right. I don't think it will spread as both ends of the crack end/start at the top of the windshield.

I've had the tint for 6 years and still looks good.

I did fix my satellite radio antenna. Found a 15ft magnetic antenna at Best Buy thay fit my radio receiver and routed it from under the dash, under the carpet, up the C post, and out of the 3rd brake light and sits on top of the roof.

My first car had blacked out windows and I got pulled over a few times for it.  They never had any interest in where I got it done here in NY.

No problems in NY, two trips down south before I moved resulted in 2 traffic stops for tint so I removed it. Not worth the hassle, especially with my town PD's reputation for traffic enforcement.

Girl near me does outstanding work with warranty for real cheap. I paid $70 for the two fronts to match the factory rears. Jennifer's Window Tinting on Facebook for those in the Appleton, WI area. A whole vehicle is like $150-$200. Maybe check with a smaller shop like that near you. Her garage is never empty and she quick.
