So I just got these brand new Continental DWS06 tires installed a month ago. Well tonight I hopped a curb trying to avoid a lady who failed to stop at a stop sign and almost hit me. Halfway home the TPMS comes on so I know I am fucked. Obviously didn't opt for the warranty on the tires cause shit like that doesn't happen to me, right? Fucking wrong. Probably fucked the alignment on the car I just got done as well. I don't even know if they will sell me one tire, or even mount and balance just one. Always something, every single month something to set me back a few hundred dollars that I don't have.

Anything can be repaired.

This is a case of just because you can doesn't mean you should.

... your life depends on the health of your tires, why risk it?
4/25/2016 8:52:44 PM EDT

No way. Center tread is one thing, side wall entirely another. Even if you can rig it somehow its incredibly unsafe.

Sorry bud.
4/25/2016 8:54:20 PM EDT

why would you imagine you can't buy a single tire? i know you live in a shitty commie state, but for fucks sake, you really think you have to buy a 4-pack?

I ordered from discount tire direct and no shop wanted to install tires they didn't sell me. So I lucked out and Direct Tire did it for me, I am hoping they will say yes to mounting and balancing just one though.

Thanks for all the thoughts and kind words as well. I should of known better not to stop at this mall. They have tiny island scattered all around the parking lot and barely any room for cars to pass by. It just makes it that much worse that these tires were only installed a month ago and I got an alignment done as well. Guessing that's good and fucked now too.

$300 to mount and balance all four plus the alignment. $255 for a brand new tire now. The kicker is the rear one has a similar crack in it, but I don't hear any air hissing out of it yet.

I hope that is just a deep scratch at the bottom of the damage on the  rim and not a crack or you will need a new rim also.

Yes you can just buy one tire.

Definitely get your alignment checked and have them look over the rim really good too.

And tire warranties are one of the few that exist that are worth it, if you don't buy from a shitty place.

side walls can't be fixed.
if it's in the tread, it's a maybe depending upon how close to the sidewall it is.
middle tread blocks are usually pretty safe to patch.

No shop worth its salt will patch a tire with a long split like that... belts and cords are busted on there, and you would end up with a bulge at the location of repair.

You have a crack in the rubber after only one month?  What's the date code on those tires?  Maybe you got sold junk tires?

You need a tire. It probably doesn't need an alignment but that's up to you. Was the steering wheel still straight after you hit the curb?

Take a little soapy water in a spray bottle and spray down the other tire. If you get bubbles you may just wanna order two. Or do the bubble test and post a pic of that tire too. Can't promise but I've worked on and around cars most of my life and I'll give an opinion at least

ANY damage to the sidewall, and a tire is considered kaput, you cannot reliably patch it because the sidewall flexes too much.

Tires are only patchable in the tread area.

Good news is the wheel isn't cracked. That was just junk that got built up when the curb rash happened. Catastrophe avoided.

The sidewall sees the most stress out of anywhere on the tire and once it's compromised it will never be as strong again. Some tire shops won't even patch the tread area if the hole is big enough.
4/25/2016 9:06:06 PM EDT
[#36]
Yes, they will let you buy one tire and even mount it for you.

No, it isn't repairable. Basically anything in the sidewall or on the outside/inside 2 inches of tread they won't patch.

If the other tire has a crack in the sidewall from hitting the curb as well, it probably needs to be replaced also. No pic so no way to tell. Just because it's not leaking air doesn't mean it's good.

Any sidewall or rimsplit is non repairable.....enough to be trustworthy.  Would you trust your life or the life of a family member when that repair blows out at 75mph?

You're better off buying a used tire at the $3 tire store franchise than trying to fix that one.

.....and no, this won't work.

4/25/2016 9:12:56 PM EDT
[#42]
If the tire is a common factory tire ask the local tire place (not a chain tire store) if they have factory pull off tires or used tires. Might get lucky and get a tire that's only had 500 miles on it.

If you are hard up for money these places exist.

The shop I bought my truck tires from wanted $30 a tire to mount and balance and I told him to piss off.  $300 would have me madder than a queer with tonsillitis on Valentine's Day. .
An alignment from Ford Dealer here is $50 or $60.

Damn dude you got ripped off big time. I could see $300 if that included the alignment.

You can get Wal-mart to mount and balance a tire for less than $15. It ain't rocket science.

What kind of tire is it? Size and brand?

My 275/60/R20 tires for my full sized truck were $180 each for a name brand tire.

Sure they'll sell you one tire. If nothing else, jack the car up, take the tire off and have a friend give you a ride to have the tire installed as a single carry-in/out.

Sidewalls aren't suppose to be repaired due to the flex they experience during driving, as several others have stated correctly.  Buy a new tire and avoid a blowout that could make you a star on the local news channel.

I've fixed a tire with a rip in the sidewall of my tractor but it doesn't exceed 10mph, and that's being generous.

With a sidewall on a passenger auto nope, out it goes as far as getting it fixed, as long as you didn't fubar the rim, it's no big deal getting one tire mounted and balanced.

depending on what you drive and how you drive it, i would say maybe if you really wanted to.

I was in the same boat you are in about 8 years ago, just bought some brand new BFG'S at $250 each and not a week later i was going throught some brush and snagged a railroad iron that had been cut with a torch right in the sidewall. Tore a nice hole i could put three fingers in. Took it to several places and no one would even touch it, which is understandable, but then i found a hole in the wall place and asked for a boot and a tube, something i have done many times on tractors and ATV's.

They did what i asked and the damn tire lasted 45k miles until it was time to replace them all. It was a 10 ply tire on a 3/4 truck and i left it on the back and never hauled anything so it had very little weight on it.

Some will call me an idiot, but knowing i would never load it down and had it on the back i rolled with it, and it worked, plus it was a huge ass boot
