Hey Guys,
I just had a Jasper reman 350/5.7 installed.  I want to run Mobil 1 synthetic.  What are your thoughts on this and what weight oil should I use?  Hard to find Mobil 1 in single weight.  Is it ok to use multi-weight?
Thanks!

And what does the manufacturer recommend that you do?

20-50 or straight 30 weight  I would run regular oil in it for break in and then switch to syn,

Jasper says "whatever OEM recommends but wait until 50 hours to go synth".....what is the OEM oil for a 350?

This is NOT rocket appliances here man.
10W-30 will work.

.

Is the  engine assembled with flat tappets , or roller cam ?

IF you have an older design flat tappet motor,  look for  a zinc containing oil formulation,  My choice would be RotellaT,  but   I would  use  any old rebranded valvoline product available WITH ZINC.

this right here.

personally i wouldn't go with a high viscosity range synthetic oil on a marine motor as its just not really needed.  you're not going to be running it in the winter, so you don't really have to worry about cold winter morning starts.  i would for sure not recommend mobil1.  mobil1 tends to have one of the lowest vaporization temps of all the synthetics, which means it burns off a lot faster than most, which can be trouble for an engine that might get one oil change a year.

If it works on your AR, it oughta work in your CAR.

Unless you are boating on water above 190dF you will not need the weights over 40.

10w30 or 20w50 full synthetic of a decent brand will be fine.

Use Rotella in any weight and be done with it.

50 hours seems excessive for a marine engine break-in  considering they are run hard.

Rotella has shearing issues... Especially the t3.

There are a ton of other cj4 spec oils that hold up exceptionally better then Rotella... And actually, rotella is the running joke of the lubricants world.

Don't worry. I think shell is spending $47 or $50 million this year to promote it.

Only out spending the rest of the 15w40 majors 4:1.

Plus they're out there making some really dumb moves in the market that Ill capitalize on.

You lost me at Jasper.

5W30 or 10W30.

Don't run diesel oil in a gas engine.

It's just a Chevy 350. Yes run Mobil 1. In Fl I've run 20/50 if you plan to run in the winter then 10/30 or 5/30.

I ran Mobil 1 5W-30 in my 1993 23' Regal Cruiser w/350 chevy. I bought it 2 years old so I didn't break it in, but agree the earlier comment to use a good quality dino oil to break it in for several hours then drain that chit out and put in the good stuff. Changing it every year in the spring after that.

Delo 10/30 semi . 13 to 14 dollars a gallon at Walmart. This will be the oil for my 2007 chevy truck , my diesel tractor, honda 4 wheeler and about 10 air cool engines.
May use it in my 2004 BMW Z4 as soon as I see what are the HTHS of the oil. If it is 3.4 or better than it will go into the BMW too.

You need to have your bullshit filter on.  Just like here.

People stress waaaay too much over oil.. In stuff that will run fine on most anything you want to throw into it. Put 10w30 in it and change it every fall. You will sell it long before it dies.
