Ok...

What I am looking for is=

A single box that will let me plug in a headset
will let me bluetooth into my phone
will let me jack into a CB or similar radio

I want this to be small, like cigarette pack or smaller small, and be dry cell (AA, AAA, 9v, 123) powered.

Bonus points if it will let me talk from that box to other boxes nearby.

Buying off Aliexpress, taobao, dealextreme would be ok.

I use a Sena helmet bluetooth intercom setup and it's awesome.  It has its own internal battery though.

It is a BT intercom to others with similar equipment 900 meter range, no phone or radio required.  It also connects to phone, music player, radar detectors, and 2-way radios.  The performance has been superb.

Hey,

that sena unit is very neat!

I'd be ok with the mike, but I'd want to use my own earphones. Does this allow for that?

I had a SENA unit for awhile, it's good stuff.

As for running your own earphones, you'd probably have to cut out the included speakers and wire in the earphones, but that would probably be pretty straightforward.

I have the Sena 10U built in model and its speakers are pretty good.
The controls blow though. My old SMH5 was much more intuitive.

Sena makes several models of the SMH10 base clamp. You just need the clamp model that allows for your own earbuds: CLICK HERE

Then add the main module separately: ADD THIS

I am in the market as well. I will probably be ordering a sena myself in the next week or so. I bought a set of moldable earplugs today and I am thinking about putting earbuds in them to go with the sena. I have friends that say it the sena unit is loud enough and clear enough to work with plugs in. The plugs were $10, so I may just hold off on the earbud part until I see how I like them with the sena. I can always change it up later.

Anyone care to offer up an opinion on which model Sena to go with? I am looking at the SMH10R or the SMH10. IIRC the SMH10 is the preferred version, the 10R is just a little lower profile and the controls aren't as intuitive.

I'm reading the 10R manual now

It looks more ruggedized...

It would help if the freaking product lines had names that made it easier to tell them apart and keep them straight.

I have the smh10. Have a few extra bases and move the unit sepending on what helmet im in. Works with phone, and with friends on other bikes. I love it. Easy to use with gloves too.

Does it work with the navigation on your phone? I'm seeing conflicting info on that.

My SENA 10S (updated version of the SMH-10) unit has an AUX in and headphone out on it. It's really an awesome little unit. battery life is pretty damn good as well.

My roommate and a couple of his friends have the 20s and have been happy with them.  He said it pairs easily with his iPhone and the range has been good.

Nice. That's what I'm looking for. I have an Android but it functions the same way you're describing. It sounds like the Sena just gets the signal from the phone, so whatever the phone sends, the Sena plays.

You'll love it. basically the only downside is for music, the speakers have fuckall for bass and can distort a bit if you crank the music up.

Looks like I missed the fact that they came out with a new version, the 10S. Revzilla says the new version has much better speakers. I have seen online where people replace the factory ones with better speakers. Now I have to decide if it's worth the extra $70 to go with the 10S or if I should try and upgrade speakers on a SMH10.

the only thing about the 10R that i dont like is that the 10 controls are super easy to find on the side of your helmet wearing gloves. A smaller unit with smaller buttons would be more difficult. But cant go wrong with Sena.

Look for the SMH5 if you can find it. Its much less expensive than the 10, but the feature set and range is everything you need.
