With all the talk in the media about what candidate said this and what candidate said that,  I've run across something I do not understand. Trump said the other day that he supports a ban on abortion and the female and Doctor to get a fine or punished. Then the other folks like the MSM and other candidates came out criticizing him for saying the female should be fined/punished. I've heard this from multiple places, but I just listened to Hugh Hewitt state over and over again that "the mother should never be punished, only the doctor." Why is this? Why is it not just as much the mothers fault? I don't understand?

Disclaimer: I am a Trump supporter, but I will vote for whoever the nominee is.

My views: I am both pro and against abortion. I believe if a female is raped or the child is very sick then an abortion is ok. However, if the mother just wants to get rid of the child because they don't want it then I am not ok with that. A mother that gets an abortion just because they don't want the child is at the end of the slippery slope that started with bad decisions. Like the way our culture is moving towards the hook up culture. I'm a relatively young person at 31(today's my birth day BTW) so I know how a lot of my peers act. They hook up with people they don't love and then when a pregnancy happens they are flabbergasted that something like this happens and then tell themselves it isn't their fault. In my opinion, and I'm sure I'll catch flak for this, you should only have sex with someone who you love and are prepared to raise a child with should that happen. The hook up culture is not healthy for our society. The break down of the family is not good for our society. And unfortunately there is not a voice out their fitting for the family and against the hook up culture that isn't religious and ridiculed.  I'm not religious. I'm agnostic, but I do believe in morals and right and wrong.

The actual question was, "if abortion was made illegal would you support punishing people that do it" (or something like that).

He said yes, they dug deeper.
The media spun it & he backtracked.

His answer should have been simply "I'm not going to speculate on a hypothetical situation," or "every defendant deserves their day in court," or something similar - but he wasn't prepared.

Jailing women that have an abortion is what leftist say Republicans want. It is a caricature of conservatives, and it demeans our values and views.  That is why everyone one is pissed.

Generally speaking, people have compassion for women placed in circumstances where they feel the need to abort a pregnancy, even if they do not agree with the act.

If he coerces or pressures baby mama into doing something illegal (in the current hypothetical "having an illegal abortion")?
Absolutely.

The whole point of punishment is to make sure the law is obeyed - otherwise we can just get rid of all laws.

Yep - and if you kill a pregnant mother you get charged with double murder.

I'm not a Trump guy at all, but he nailed it when it comes to the logical conclusion to believing abortion is murder.  I'm sorry, but there's no objective difference between the idea of letting mothers get away with having illegal abortions and lobbying for abortion to be legal.  And the fact that pro-life people hold this belief purely for the sake of not alienating female voters makes it even worse.  If you think the punishment of child murderers is dependent on how it looks to voters, I begin to doubt that you believe it's really murder in the first place.  It just seems like positioning for purely strategic political reasons to me.

Several years ago Hustler magazine published a cartoon where a jaded janitor was cleaning out some Ladies room.  On the floor were several aborted fetuses.  You could tell because there was a wire hanger in the heads of every fetus on the floor.

Another magazine another cartoon: A father protesting some abortion clinic.  Next to him on the picket line was his daughter, estimated 13 years old.  She was informing her father the joyous news that she was preggers.

History Lesson: From before humans learned to write down history women have done numerous things to either keep from Becoming pregnant or to cease Being pregnant.  Believing that revoking abortion laws will stop women from having abortions is about on the level of thinking of the dumber Bernie followers.  Women will go back to using wire hangers, knitting needles and anything else they can to initiate miscarriages like they did in centuries past.

Recent History Lesson:  Nicolae Ceau?escu of Rumania.  Nicolae Ceau?escu is your patron saint for those that wish for strict anti-abortion laws.  He passed laws that made Rumanian women nearly constantly pregnant.  They were forced to have up to five children each.  When he was finally deposed women up to five months pregnant had abortions.

I once kept note of politicians that voted against legalization of abortion.  They were never again seen on the ballots for public office.

I like to remember what My Mother once told me about abortion.  She was very much Against it.  But the way the Anti's acted up made it seem that women nothing more but slaves.

I noticed Threads like this one question always seem to be missing: What happens if The Woman In Question just doesn't want to be pregnant  Nobody seems to be asking it.

So when the Question of Should Abortion Be Lawful comes around I'm doing Two Things:
One: As I cannot become pregnant I'm staying away.  Whatever The Women Want So Shall They Receive.
Two: Remember history as best as I can.

Abortion is about getting rid of black and hispanic minorities.

Look up the facts for yourself...
White women are 55.6% of female the population, but have 36% of abortions.
Black women are 12.6% of the female population, but have 30% of abortions. A rate almost 4 times that of white women.
Hispanic women are 17% of the female population, but have 25% of abortions. A rate over double that of white women.
All other races are 15% of the female population, but have 9% of abortions. A rate slightly lower than white women.

Have you ever wondered why Planned Parenthood abortion clinics are located near minority neighborhoods?

I bet you'll never hear Hillary or Bernie talk about killing off minority babies.

Thanks for the BD well wishes!

If the father of the child is in on the decision to abort the child, then I believe he is just as guilty. After all, it takes a mother and a father to conceive, and any abortion decision should be made by both parents, with the obvious exception of rape. If the father of the child does not know the mother is getting an abortion and has nothing to do with it then no I do not believe he is guilty. All of this is only applicable if abortion was against the law.

She should not have sex at all. Or atleast use protection/birth controland only with a partner that she could foresee raising a child with. That is the reason I believe a person should only have sex with a person they love. I believe men should follow the same rules.  The hook up culture that has come about has resulted in many one parent children who do not grow up to be anything worthwhile. Of course there are exceptions to every rule.

I agree with you. I believe a lot of the negative "press" (for lack of a better word) comes from the religious community.

I believe a certain way, as you can see in my original post, but I do not think I have the power or the right to dictate what other people should do. However, with that being said, when the actions of someone hurt society as a whole, like having children without two parents do, then I believe the society should have a right to try to curb the problem.

I'm still not sure I understand where the thought process of "the mother is never guilty" is coming from? I've heard it from a couple different sources in the MSM so far. Where does it come from? Is it just a type of spin to try to appease those on the fence?

I mean if a person needs a heart transplant, and they go to a black market surgeon who kills someone to provide them with a heart, is the patient never guilty? That's the same thing basically. In my opinion of course the patient is guilty. They made the decision to do it.

I just don't see where this obvious illogical thought has come from.

What happens if a woman just does not want to be pregnant?

She should not have sex at all. Or atleast use protection/birth controland only with a partner that she could foresee raising a child with. That is the reason I believe a person should only have sex with a person they love. I believe men should follow the same rules.  The hook up culture that has come about has resulted in many one parent children who do not grow up to be anything worthwhile. Of course there are exceptions to every rule.

Here is the thing though, not everybody shares your belief.

Hook up culture works just fine for some people. Not everybody wants to settle down, and some people out there desire true freedom. 100% effective male birth control can't come soon enough...

Condoms break and accidents happen. I'd get plan B right after the fact of course.

Other people don't have that kind of common sense though.

It's unrealistic to think that an Abortion ban would occur under Trump unless something really weird happened in the Supreme Court.

Lol..Trump fucked up.

The whole point of the "question" (which was really an accusation) was for there to be no 'correct' answer.
It's what the libs do to any Republican who is having enjoying any success or popularity, it's an obvious torpedo.
Trump's best bet would have been to call Matthews out on a stupid hypothetical, pointing out to him that 'the President
doesn't write the law" or something similar.  I'm not a Trump supporter, but I get sick of this same bullshit tactic getting used
to great effect against anyone of the Republican side.  Republicans and conservatives need to figure out how to call out these
biased accusations and refuse to accept stupid premises like this or they will continue to get caught with no 'correct' answer.

I get what your saying.

However, if the person you are having sex with is someone you love and care for, doesn't mean you have to be married, then raising a kid should not be a problem. After all, that's pretty much what we are made to do, procreate. So should the female get pregnant, even though she was on birth control, then yea it would not be what the couple wanted but they could make it work, for the kid, like any decent person would. Where on the other hand if a female gets pregnant by some guy she just met last night, doesn't even know, but just had sex with them for fun, then it is a much bigger deal. She doesn't know that guy. And as strange as this sounds, because while she is comfortable doing the most intimate thing with that guy, most of the time they find having an abortion is the easier road than talking to the guy and explaining they are pregnant and express the idea that they should raise the child together for the benifit of the child. This doesn't mean it is all the woman's fault. It's both their fault for being irresponsible and having sex without understanding the risk of children.

I think one of the main issues is that popular culture, while promoting the hook up culture, has separated the fact that having sex is fun and having sex produces children. From experience with my peers, I know sex and children is the last thing on their minds. What's more likely is they are thinking about having sex for fun and what social activity they are going to do later.

Congress can pass a law affirming the fetus' rights under the constitution.
Doesn't need the court.

I agree. However I find it highly unlikely that congress will do anything remotely useful that isn't in their self interest.

Ideally we wouldn't need these type of laws. Again, ideally, it would be nice if people didn't make stupid decisions that create a slippery slope that ends at abortion of convenience.

So, in conclusion, we are pretty much in agreement that if abortion was illegal then the mother would be just as guilty as anyone involved in the process? Including the father if he has anything to do with it.
