i'm running a bad assed supercharged mobile pentium III 500Mhz in a dell laptop, cooled with liquid nitrogen and overclocked to 5 bazillion gigahertz
it's hard to type on though because my fingers get cold pretty quick |

Not one but two AthlonMP 2000s, a gig of ecc reg DDR, three 18.2GB Seagate U160 cheatees! On this machine.
My little box has a pair of PIII 667s and a gig of PC133 and identical HDD setup to my main rig. Wifes rig is a dell Poweredge 600 with 2.4Ghz Northwood, and a half gig of reg ecc DDR, and two 36 Gig Fujitsu U160 SCSI drives, I had to use a PCI Geforce4 MX 400 video card because this thing has no AGP slot. I know it is a server, but it was cheap and I had a big enough credit owed me by Dell SB that I was able to get it set up with tons of storage and mem and it didn't cost a cent out of pocket, and the mail in rebate covered the sound and video cards. Edited to add: the Fujitsu drives in the Dell are U320 drives but the controller is U160. |

the box said 'requires windows 98 or better', so I bought a Mac:
2 CPU @ 1 Ghz 1 Gb RAM, 80+120 Gb HDs CD-DVD read-write combo drive. 22 inch flat panel display (I treated myself to all this last year after 120 days on travel [and per-diem] for work) And I just started using a 256 Mb solid state USB drive to transfer data to-from work |

Just got my new toy two weeks ago:
Aopen 8xagp motherboard P4 2.53 533fsb 1g DDR 400mhz ram Raedon 9500 pro with 128mb 8xAGP 80g Maxtor 7200rpm ata133 on board 5.1 sound (had to keep it cheap and this is easy to upgrade) Three fans 16x DVD and 52x CDRW 420 watt power supply 19" optiquest monitor Love the thing. Bought it from [url]www.ibuypower.com[/url] for cheaper than it would have cost me to put together myself if I totaled all the parts and shipping. They aren't much for documentation but the thing runs awesome. |

I have noticed many people have went with the LCD monitors, I probably would have at Christmas but I got laid off instead. I was wondering if everybody is happy with thier LCDs? I realize that I would be giving up image quality and screen size by going to a LCD (I am using a 21" HP that came from a scientific worksataion that I was tasked to throw away after the first batch of layoffs). So are the LCDs worth the money?

LCD's are much easier on the eyes - there being no "refresh". The pixels stay on until you change them, unlike the sweeping beam that has to sweep fast enough to fool your eyes. That will tire them quick. My dad spends all day in front of a CRT (doing spreadsheets) and his eyes get tired real fast. He's moving to a 17''-18'' LCD as soon as he finds a good deal (cheap bastard - I'm offering to buy him one but he's waiting out the market. Don't have a credit card or I would have bought one outright.)
After using my laptop all day, my old crt looks fuzzy to me. Definitely a big improvement. Now having that 21'' CRT is pretty nice too, and if it came off a workstation, it's probably a pretty decent one, too. If you can spare the ~$400 for an 18'' (find the right combination of coupons and get it through Dell Small Biz - watch techbargains.com for those deals), I'd say get one. You won't be dissappointed. Oh, and you'll save a hell lot of desk space over that 21'' CRT, too. |

Do you have the DDR version or the earlier SDR version? You running X? I've got a Clamshell iBook with a 366 PowerPC 750 (aka G3) w/ 576MB RAM. I've upgraded the internal CDROM drive to a CDRW, and put a 40GB/5400RPM/16MB Cache in place of the 6GB that was in it. I'm waiting for the PowerBooks to be upgraded, and then I'm going to get a 1GHz PBG4 when they go on fire sale. Edit: Forgot to say I'm running 10.2.5. God, I love X. And for LCD's, they aren't good for color work, at least not yet, but other than that they rock. Also remember that a 19" LCD has the same viewable as a 21" CRT. Its how they measure the size or something. But I love LCD's they take up no space, and are much clearer. |

So are the LCDs worth the money? When I got the new computer I moved my old one to the office and bought a 17" Sony LCD off Overstock.com for $350. It is nice, but for gaming it is a bit slow, at least when not using the dvi interface, and blurs a bit in fast action. That's why I kept my old monitor for my new computer. But the space savings is awesome, which is why we got one for something that will mainly be used for word processing, internet, and photos. |
