Not even close.  I'm posting this because more and more I'm seeing this weird snobbery in the field.  Look up the reviews for load carriers and you'll see people sneering at UTG and Condor because it (gasp) costs less than a mortgage payment.  When people boast about never having optics that cost less than the rifle they're missing the point that gear is supposed to make you function better; it's not meant to be a fashion statement.  The best functioning weapons I've ever bought are usually the used ones with scratches and heavy holster wear that noone else wants because they weren't pretty enough.

Take a look at this guy with sandals made out of some old tire and a bag his daughter probably made for him from his other pair of pants-

So please check the box- who is the most badass...

[  ] The guy who brags about never buying UTG gear.
[  ] Viet Cong guy sleeping in a tunnel underground

Admit it- if I didn't point out that first photo was a separatist fighter you'd be ranking on him about his do-rag, wouldn't you?

At this point in life, I try to buy gear that suits what I am going to use it for.  I am not in the special forces, and I don't plan to jump out of any helicopters.  I do drive a four dour sedan to work every day while wearing a suit.  I choose gear that suits my situation and my AO.

The dude posted by the OP looked well suited to his environment.  I'm sure he would have preferred an AK though.

The term he's looking for is 'airsoft gear used in combat". It's still airsoft crap.

Actually, people sneer at them because they are shit, and fall apart with marginal use.

In this game, you generally get what you pay for.

Now, I will say that some things start getting diminishing returns depending on skill.

I've got a nice piece of glass on my DM rifle. For my skill level, a $6000 optic wouldn't get me much more, while some guys can actually make that extra money work really well for them.

Still, buying a $40 RDS versus an Aimpoint is a no brainer.

Arrrrrgh.

But seriously, I'd be willing to bet that guy would gladly take one of those $1,000 optics if he had either the means to procure one or the ability to mount it.
Particularly since, like myself, he appears to have reached the age of "my eyes aren't what they used to be".

There seems to be two things in play here.

Is good gear required?
and
What designates an effective fighter?

I would argue that solid gear is required, and we have no idea if either of the OP's heroes are effective fighters.

I'm with OP on this one. You guys with your expensive guns and fantasy gear disgust me. This is what  a real warrior looks like,

No $500 dollar plate carrier "rig" for him or gucci battlebelt. Just his life preseverer. He doesn't need to accessorize everything in multicam, no gay moral patches, no fancy IR patches. His life preserver is his uniform and it protects him from drowning in case of a tidal wave. Arfcomms operators will be fucked if a tidal wave comes in, they can't swim in all that crap and they will be too distracted by the thought of having any of their gear wet. Not to mention he's got work gloves on not some fancy $100 a pair gloves worn by Travis Hailey. It doesn't get any more pipehitter then wearing work gloves while putting in work.

The "best" Indian would find a use for that arrow without the need for long-range precision.  Maybe as a flaming arrow that only has to be accurate enough to hit a covered wagon...or, as a shank or something.

I'm confused.

Those guys are carrying around dinged-up non-camo'd POS rifles sans slings or optics because that's all they have.

You can bet your ass if you said "Hey Ivan, you can have that SKS... or this KAC with an Aimpoint, DBAL, and other fancy pants gear" there's no way he'd keep the SKS.

If you're saying "Tier one shit doesn't make you tier one" then... yeah, sure. That's pretty self evident.

But to not have good gear, if you can easily afford it, is kind of foolish, no?

Agreed.

While it's true that I own several ACOGs for example, I used a red mesh onion bag as a dump pouch at my first carbine class.

The lessons I learned while wearing that stupid onion bag have served me far better than the thousands of dollars I have invested in optics and gear
