Brought the midnight numbers up to the control room and mentioned to my coworker that I have Ben-Hur ready to watch downstairs to kill the rest of the shift.
Before You say it, I'm in baby sitter mode at my job now, real work is done, I just watch the plant run, and the boss is cool with it. Anyway, he's 52 and looks at me funny, so I ask him, and he says he never even heard of Ben-Hur, let alone watched it. To make him feel a little bad, I pull up IMDB and show him that this movie won 11 academy awards and was a huge hit, exclaiming that I couldn't believe he hadn't seen it. Most of you guys have seen it, right? Isn't it one of those movies that most people have seen at least once? Anyway, I gig on it.......Ramming speed!!!! edit: he does know and love every Steven Segal movie ever made though. |

Ben-Hur is an impressive movie. More so when one considers the lack of CGI in it.
It has always been a favorite movie of mine, and I like to watch it at least once a year around Easter. I did see some of the previews for the new version... and promptly turned it off.
Not something I want to see. Hollywood should have left well enough alone. |

"Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ" author had a fascinating life.

The chariot race should get anybody's adrenaline going, no matter how jaded they are. Details of prepping for and filming the race are about halfway down the page here.
...The cameras used during the chariot race also presented problems. The 70mm lenses had a minimum focal length of 50 feet (15 m), and the camera was mounted on a small Italian-made car so the camera crew could keep in front of the chariots. The horses, however, accelerated down the 1,500-foot (460 m) straightaway much faster than the car could, and the long focal length left Marton and Canutt with too little time to get their shots. The production company purchased a more powerful American car, but the horses were still too fast, and even with a head start, the filmmakers only had a few more seconds of shot time. As filming progressed, vast amounts of footage were shot for this sequence. The ratio of footage shot to footage used was 263:1, one of the highest ratios ever for a film... The scene where the Sheik invited his horses into his tent was cool. It took a lot of training to get those horses to do that. |

Chuck Heston is still my President.
Given the longstanding communist mind-set prevalent in Hollywood (No surprise that there are so many re-makes; Communists are destroyers, not creative, original thinkers) I have no doubt that the over-riding theme of the book, and the Heston movie, i.e., redemption through Christ, will be given short shrift. |

The Ten Commandments is being shown today at the movie theaters that show classics. I have two near me. I'm considering that today as the g/f is hosting a candle party to help her friend. I would love to see it in a theater. My dad saw it when it first came out. He said the chariot with the spikes was on display in the lobby. |

If you check movie times in your area, you may find theatres that show the classics. I have a carmike and a regal theater near me that both give one theater to classics on some Sundays. I know cinemark does it too. |

The original 1959 production was nothing short of a Hurculean feat.
No CGI bullshit everything was analog. Cast of 365 with another 50,000 extras. 1,100,000 feet of 70mm film was shot. Chariot race took 1 year to plan and 5 weeks over a 3 month period to shoot. While there were injuries, deaths on set are an urban myth. The worst was Heston's stuntman Joe Canutt who can be seen going airborne while holding the chariot reins. Incredibly, actor Stephen Boyd did all but 2 of his his own stunts including wearing steel armor under his costume for the sequence where he's dragged till bloody. The scene where he gets smashed by a speeding chariot was a costumed dummy. |

Ben Hur really set the standard for a respectful portrayal of Christ on film I can't get enough of those two films. All the Biblical epics are great. |

It was a great scene................gives a person an idea what a Triumph was like..........the only inaccuracy was that Arrius should have had his face painted red when parading around Rome, but the scale of it was awesome
