The Internet has failed me so far.  Here's what was going on.  I walk into the kitchen to grab a beer and my dishwashing machine is making rhythmic gurgling and breathing noises.  I haven't run it for two days.  I open it and it's dry.  There's a valve on the side where the noises are coming from.  I can hear water draining into the garbage disposer.  The faucet doesn't work.  I search the house.  The other faucets don't work and one of the bathroom faucets blows air.  Actually, I didn't check which direction the air was moving.

Then I start inspecting outside.  I open one of the hose bibs and it is sucking in air.  I enter the basement/crawlspace where the water heater resides.  It's dry.  I can hear gurgling and water running through it.  I shut off the water service and it stops.

I suspect a venting issue of some sort, but I don't know.  Any ideas?  Hopefully one response tells me what's going on and how to fix it and the rest make me laugh.  Thanks.

Sounds like the main line that provides water to your home broke.

Call your water provider. They may not know.

You need the throw the breaker on your water heater if it's electric.

It's probably too late. You'll need to replace the heating elements. They're toast.

Whatever you do when you get into it, do NOT put your fingers in your mouth...

Sounds like air in the pipes because the city workers have turned it off to work on the lines.

Thanks, I didn't think to shut it off.

Two weeks ago they replaced my water meter with a smart meter.  I can't imagine that they're connected after this time.  The ground was dry around it, but I'll go open the lid and take a peek.

The line that broke could be miles from your home. I'm talking about the 6" or larger water main that runs down the side of the road. You live at a higher elevation than the break and all the water is running down hill.

Since you said you have a new meter, you should have a check valve in the meter yoke.

If you look at your meter you should see a valve on the side facing the road. The other end is round. That's the check valve.

Call your water provider and tell them what happened. Water should not run backwards from your house. (Unless the line that broke is the line from the meter to your house)

ETA:

IMO you need to call the non emergency number to the 911 office and tell them what's going on.

I called the utility and the recording said they were aware of the water main break.  Their website and Twitter account hadn't been updated.   Thanks for the help.  Now it sounds like I get to have some fun with some heating elements.

Check with a neighbor to see if they have water.

When you go take another look at your meter - see if it looks like this.

If it does - the round thing circled in red is a check valve. It didn't work. Monday I'd call the water utility and let them know what happened. They need to fix it.

Good luck with the water heater elements. You can check the top one first. You may want to shutoff your water service and the breaker to your water heater and do it now while it's empty.
