What is an APBT (American Pit Bull Terrier)? Many years ago early man saw the usefulness of domesticated dogs and began to domesticate and breed them for specific purposes. In the beginning there were: sight hounds, scent hounds, and kill hounds. We are going to focus on the kill hounds to help understand the roots of the APBT. Kill hounds were precisely what the term says, men used them to aid in killing dangerous game, while doing this the men would work directly in close proximity to the hounds. Many of our modern breeds developed from these “kill hounds” Mastiffs, APBT, and many others. Most likely this list also includes fan favorites like the Sheppard family along with many others. Over the year’s humans have crossed breeds and type to get the desired results for whatever purpose they were looking for, be it looks, aggression, courage, trailing, speed, etc.
The APBT was originally known as the Bulldog, not the lazy English bulldog of today, but probably much more similar to the American Bulldog. And their job was to help handle large livestock, a single bulldog could grasp a bull by the nose and allow a farmer or butcher to work with the animal at must less danger to themselves. We are talking pre 1800’s here. These dogs could also help protect the family home and fight off other animals. At some point in the 1700-1800 (time line may not be exact) people began to cross the larger, stronger bulldogs with the smaller tenacious terriers of the time. These were not pet dogs at the time they were all working dogs expected to physically dominate other animals. At some point people began to engage in the “sports” (I use the term loosely) of bear baiting, lion fighting, and dog fighting. The dogfighting especially took hold in England, Ireland, and later the Americas. The Westminster kennel club was originally the Westminster Pit, where Lords and Ladies would entertain foreign dignitaries to “battles of England’s gladiator dogs” These dogs were handled closely in the fights by men, much as they had worked and fought with men in days gone by. As a result of the stressful situations and proximity to men the dogs with the best temperament were preferred, as who wants to get bit right? Over the next 200-300 years “Pit Bulls” were bred for “gameness” (don’t quit), athletic ability, and temperament (the ability to be handled by humans in stressful situations). At some point or another dog fighting has been outlawed in most reasonable and civilized countries, while it does continue to flourish in some shady areas. What remains of the breed is what we see today. Sadly, most people will never encounter a real APBT as it is a dying breed. Unfortunately, many people will encounter imposters in “pit bull” garb, behind any given shack or shanty are ghetto bred “Pits” that have no pedigree or purpose. I have owned and been around APBT & “Pit Bulls” for the last 15 years or so. I just kind of wound up with my first through a random series of events and have learned and associated with them ever sense. Do they serve a purpose in 99% of homes today? No. Not even in mine. They are not a pet that is reasonable for a majority of the population to own, but are GREAT dogs when they are bred and raised by a competent owner/breeder. The goal of my writing this, for the few that read it, is to explain and help people to understand what a real APBT is, they are not the dogs seen on TV. If we ban them, why not ban all “working” dogs, except for qualified professionals? I have meet good Pit Bulls, and bad ones. There are two problems with them, 1 humans, 2 humans. Most people do not understand how to breed of raise them, and unfortunately many with GOOD intentions do not understand the extreme physical capabilities of the animals. I don’t think they are good or bad, they just are what they are. |

Neither are data sets, I guess. Youre a smart guy so I assume you just trusted them to not be full of shit and skipped the procedure. Take a look at it. |

I was gonna TL;DR assuming it was peet bool apologist garbage, but it's a good post.
In my experience, 99.9% or more of dog owners are not in tune with their animal, or truly capable of training it. Just because your dog can sit on command doesn't mean it's trained. This fact, mixed with the amount of adoption pits out there with no paperwork on their bloodline, makes me very weary of the breed from a self preservation standpoint. I personally have met a pit bull that was "the sweetest dog ever" (like they ALL are) when I was over there, only to find out 2 months later it attacked it's owner and he required 20 stitches. Obviously this can happen with any breed, but this is kind of what this breed was designed to do, as you point out. Labradors didn't spend a great deal of their history being selectively bred as killing/fighting machines. I'll never own one, I'll never fully trust one, and I won't leave beings I care about around one. |

3 out of the 5 bad dog interactions I've personally experienced in my life have been involving pit bulls. 2 of those wound up with a dead dog and a chewed up kid. Shitty owners? Probably. I don't advocate a ban on them, I just keep my kids away from them best I can. One went after my 18 month old 7 years ago. Growling in his face. The neighbor called it back in time, built a fence, then got rid of it once it tore up a kid trick or treating a couple years later. I'm sure yours is fine, but I'm sure you don't expect me to trust that, just as you wouldn't completely trust my Golden Retriever with your kid. |

I still can't tell if I have a "Bullboxer" or a pit. All I know is she is a big baby. My wife and I have 3 kids, she's not once been aggressive towards them. And two of them are still toddlers who climb all over her. She doesn't give a crap, and when she's finally tired of it, she just stands up and walks off, normally to just come sit by me if I'm at my desk, or partially in my lap if I'm on the couch. She's very protective of my kids too and sleeps with my son half the time curled up at his waste.
She's also very good at letting us know if ANYTHING is around outside too....almost too well.
Like some others though, I wouldn't let my kids just play around some strangers pit, or any dog of any real size without knowing the owner and the dog very well. |

As a surveyor in WV I have won numerous bets by petting these "killer dogs". At 51 I have never been bitten by a dog. Hate the shitty owners not the loving dogs. Having said that, any pit dog that exhibits aggressiveness towards humans should be put down. FIFY |

I guess you didnt read This Thread a couple of dozen...ranging from just banning them to at least one person saying they should all be killed Some notable quotes Every damn pitbull needs to be shot. Don't care what anyone has to say to that either. And this is why I just shake my head when I read the idiots on this site post about how loving their pit is and how they get a bad rap. Fuck that shit breed. I don't care what they were like 50 years ago, they are a trash breed now and I would be ok with every one of them being euthanized. The only good breed of peace is a dead bread of peace.
Ok My bad not calling for a Ban...just extermination of the Breed.. In among Mouthbreathing assholes Blaming the Kid (Then backing off) and a SHITLOAD Blaming the OP...even though it wasnt his dog, nor was he htere at the time |
